Well I've been talking with a friend (who makes a living
pounding bugs out of commercial C++ source) and it
seems that there's a new bug in the Steam platform's handling
of the cache files that will leave them all inconsistent when
Steam is interrupted without fully exiting (such as when
HL manages to hardlock or flat reboot the machine, something
it's talented at doing to me). His guesses match the behaviour
I'm seeing, so I'm feeling we have the right idea.
The Steam forums are full of suggestions for this, which range from
useless to absurd... GG Valve running a support site, because we
all know that deleting a user-interface library is going to fix problems
with a filesystem...
Well, if no one here has be bitten by it, good. I wanted to move my steam
tree anyway Time to reinstall from scratch. Once I get a full working
cache I'm going to copy the whole damn steam tree somewhere safe,
then if this happens again, bump this thread with a workaround; if we

I get the same message after it "updated" yesterday.... all I wanted was to play an hours TFC... instead of wasting an hour with more Steam B.S. and its still broken...

My steam was doing that last week for awhile, eventually I got in and got my fix...but it sure sucked with no TFC or DOD for a few hours. _________________

When all else fails delete clientregistry.blob file restart STEAM it updates and your back in buisness. Thats my solution to when this happens.
