I am thinking when i get some cash to upgrade something on this machine... just I am at a loss as for what to upgrade....

SPECS:

Asus Mobo / Intel Celeron 2.4

256 ATI RADEON 9200 with tv out.

256 MB DDRAM

120 GIG HD (60% full)

52 x 24 x 52 CDRW

Soundblaster Live 5.1 Surround sound and all that...

Or i can just change around the cooling system a bit or something...

Any suggestions?

Get the Celeron out of there. If your mobo can accept a P4, go for it. Celerons are a VERY poor processor, especially for gaming. At least get 256 megs more mem. Maybe, go up to a 9600 on the vid card, depending on what resolution you want to play at. Anything above 1024 x 768 your 9200 willl struggle a bit (depending on what game). If you don't upgrade your processor, you will be cpu limited above that res also, if a new vid card is thrown in. Total cost would be about $375.00 give or take a few coins. How much do you have to spend?

Yeah definitely RAM and possibly the processor and vid card. Everything else looks good.

Depends on what is most important to you. If gaming is important then the video card and more ram will give you the best bang for your buck.

If gaming isnt that important...I wouldnt know what is then.....But ram would then be first, followed by either the CPU or the video card. a P4 2.4C should drop into your machine easily and cheaply and make a huge difference over the Celeron. A 2.6, 2.8 or 3.0 would also be nice

You ask about cooling, that wont gain you any performance but it is always important. Check your bios to see what the system is running at and then you can decide if you need to improve the cooling as any upgrade will add more heat inside the case.

Cheers

Great suggestions, all. I went a similar route when I rebuilt/built my new one: RAM, CPU, and Video card. Only the new video card may expose the need for a new monitor. Mo $, mo $, mo $...........

I agree with the Ram, but I know you like to do play with graphic stuff, and maybe movies. So, I thought you might want to check out a DVD burner with some software that will allow you to put together video clips and pictures. Maybe?

Hamese, assuming you have one, what burner and software do you use?

Defintely more physical memory.

If you are running windows (NT based versions, so NT/2K/XP),
look at the "performance" tab of task-manager while you are
gaming (easier if you run the game in a window ).

The line labled "total" under the "commit charge" section is telling:
Commit charge is window's lovely name for the total of all allocated
memory, both what actually exists and what is being simulated with
hard drive space.

As an example, on my current machine (soon to get much more
physical memory), running Planetside results in a commit charge
of about 808 megabytes, which is roughly 3.5 times the amount
of RAM that I actually have right now. (256mb, same).

Thus, about 550mb of the game's requirements for memory are
being met with disk space rather than ram, and I get alot of lag when
entering new scenes as modles and textures and so forth are copied off
my HD and something else copied on to make room.

It's funny: For how critical understanding demand paged virtual
memory is for performance tuning, not enough people seem to
even know it exists. Not long ago I was flabbergasted by a post
elsewhere in which the author insisted that only old DOS programs
used HD space to simulate memory. Nevermind that dpvm is an
old concept predating IBM's desire to make a cheap "Personal
Computer", and has continued into every modern OS...
