Im looking into the different martial arts forms. Recently a grand master comes into my school every year for a week to give us some self defense and general advice, Hogarth is his last name I believe. Hes won the World Weapons Series (I think thats what its called) three times and in general, he could kick the living shit out of almost anyone on the planet... Its amazing all the stuff that he knows, and, I figured that prehaps it might be a good thing to look into for a past time outside physical fitness and spending time with my freinds (yea including that one that has me "whipped" roof or is it BRN ). Ive read that there are three main forms arts, karate, judo and another one which I cant remember. But, they all have sub forms that you can go into. Thus, I am totrally confused as to what might/might not be a good art/form to learn. Ive tried to find some videos on the net, prehaps even some websites, but I cant really find anything that would give me a good example of the different forms or arts. Im leaning towards karate, since close-quarters is usually where you fight - and also because I find that Japanese Karate is amazing. Though Im not sure. Anyways, if anyone knows of some good forms for any of the major arts then prehaps they could possibly share?

I did Tae Kwan Do for 6 years, its probably the best if u are looking forward to learning self defense and are interested in testing those skills on others in competition. In karate they didnt really do anything, they kidna hit u one time and said like STOP point, i was like wth....

Tae Kwan Do to win

Tae-Kwon-Do is more of a competitive sport rather then acual real life defense, it you want a martial art where you learn to protect yourself, try out Hapkido i took Tae-Kwon-Do all the way to red belt lost interset and switched to Hapkido and made it all the way to green belt before i had to move. But I learned more making it to that green belt in hapkido then i did in Tae-Kwon-Do. Hapkido is mostly defense , though there is some offense moves, theres alot of aikido and juda moves used, alot of grappling and arm locks / twist, pressure points, joint locks, very serious shizt that you wouldint want to try out on a friend full force, one of the moves was a counter attack fro when someone grabbed your wrist youd grab um under the palm and twist there arm there natural reaction is gonna be to pull back there arm so as you twist you drive there elbow into there diofram and continue to twist rippin all the tendons & ligments. In a Tae-Kwon-Do fight most youll get is a black eye lol but the Tae-Kwon-Do sparrin was fun!

Just carry a shovel with you and you will be fine. Or a crowbar, if it suits you better.

I have both of my sons in Taekwando my oldest just tested thursday for his blue belt and my youngest is a camo belt. I think alot of it has to do with the instructors on how much you learn. They have had a group of 15-20 competitors going to the tourney's and have been sweeping all the trophies. My oldest has been to 5 tourney's and has 14 trophies has taken first in weapons in everyone and 1st or 2nd in sparring and 1st,2nd or 3rd in forms. They are competing against schools with as many as 100 students. The last tournament there were 978 competitor's and my sons school with 13 students brught home 39 trophies. So like I said it has alot to do with the instructors. My sons instructor is rank #2 in the world.

I think jujitsu and judo would be good if you're wanting to learn some self-defense. Hapkido is also supposed to be a good martial art and ninjutsu is the art of ninja!! Fwoosh!.

It really comes down to want you want to do, and what you think might be fun/interesting. There are hundreds of different styles of different forms and arts...One of my favorites though is the brazillian art of capoeira. If you want to see some videos of a guy that owns at it, look up Joe Eigo.

the Hogarth guy told us that most people who take Taekwando know nothing about self defense, though he did mention that some schools can actually teach you forms that might become useful in self defense. That Joe guy is totally amazing too... Though, I dont really like that fighting style, Ryerson university - one site where I found of viceo of him at - is practiccally right beside my house. Im going to attempt looking into some differnt forms of Judo and prehaps Karate, maybe there are some good videos around on the net somewhere.
