Aragorn/Kurt,
I live in Virginia, so I am familiar with your argument about the flag not being a symbol of hate in its origins. However, I have seen it used as a symbol of hate quite specifically. (White supremacist groups appear quite fond of it.) So, I don't think it is always complete ignorance that causes people to be offended. In some cases, the flag whether used true to its roots or not, has been used to intmidate and insult.
I mean I'm not one that agrees with all the Politcally Correct bull like school books not using terms like "old" or "poor" because some theoretical people might get offended. But the confederate flag...? That's seems a little different to me. Its been around long enough to have picked up some additional historical baggage. Anyway, my heritage is Irish and my people were all probably starving to death an ocean away when this war was fought. |

Plenty of Irish and German people lived in the US at the time of the civil war. Germans made up a fairly good portion of the south, and there were tons of Irish emigrant workers. _________________

| True VP, but not my relatives according to family lore. But yeah, the Irish Potato famine started in 1845, so definitely lots of Irish were here before the start of the war. |
