lol I never knew my sig would generate such conversation. Just becasue i have a flag saying the south will rise again does not mean I want the south to rebel again or anything lol.
Yes the war was fought over states rights, and not slavery, not saying slavery did not play a part in the war. Let me hit y'all with some facts less than 3% of the south that owned slaves were the large Plantation owners. Now if say 5% f the southern whites owned slaves and the war was over slavery, why would the rest of the 90 something precent fight to keep slaves they did not even own. My ancestors like most others were poor framers, they took care of their own lands. I mean some people would like to make you think that back then everyone in the south was a bunch of rich plantation owners with a whip in one hand and a mint julip in the other hand, this was not the case lol.

Not if Jeb Bush has anything to say about it! He'll get all of those senior citizens to take up arms. Just make sure they can get to the country kitchen for dinner at 2pm.

I see. That's interesting really, now I'm wondering if most people are just reading the few pages about the nature of the North and South right before they dive into thick chapters on the history of the actual events of the Civil War.

I'm more of a person who likes the events and not the nature of them. I'm more of a general trivia buff when it comes to history. I don't mind hearing about the nature of historical events, but sitting down and reading it is another story.

pride and patriotism goes a long way (your flag for example) so they could have fought just because of the fact that they were fighting. And how many of them were informed of what was actually going on, seeing as we in this modern age aren't all that well informed either?

i mean these are basically assumtptions on my part but they make sense to me. I haven't "learned" anything about the civil war in years and my need for it is next to none. history is good and all but really it was near 150 years ago... ( don't want to do amth right now)

I mean SC is part of the USA too, you could put an american flag and have just as much pride.( i'm not saying do it because excessive patriotism has been pet peeve recently. )

There were a lot of issues that lead up to the Civil War. Foremost, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the mostly agricultural South resented the mostly industrial Northerners from dictating to them how to handle their affairs. The Abolitionist North wanted to abolish slavery, stop the trade of cotton with British textile mills, and force the southerners to pay and enforce federal taxes.
Little known was the fact that the British Government pumped up southern seccessionist with promises of guaranteed loans and arms if they seceeded from the Union and promised exclusive trade with the Brits.
The Brits were still stinging over the Revolutionary War and still kept cool relations toward the United States until WW I, when they needed our help.
Basically, the Civil War boiled down to a clash of cultures. True, the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery, but it took another hundred years for the Blacks to win civil freedom.

Also, as mentioned before, a lot of the war was over the rights of the states'. Many misinterpretted the Constition's statement of "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union..." as a better way to provide common defense and welfare for the people, while letting the states take care of most of their own needs. When the federal government started to pass laws, people started complaining that they were "transgressing on the rights of the states."

I'm a little fuzzy on the following subject, but I'll try and explain it as best as I can remember. The states thought that they should be judges of whether or not the government was overstepping their boundaries, and that they could nullify, within their state, any law passed if that said state voted and agreed on it. Several southern states used this ability when they found that a few of the imposed tariffs benefited some states -- namely northern ones -- but not themselves. This happened approximately 40 years before the war I believe, and the resentment simply continued to grow until the breaking point.

I'm still self-teaching myself on the subject with several books I have, so if I've made a mistake, please feel free to flame me unemotionally and correct my mistake

All I know is Im not responsible for my daddies dads dad. Im responsible for today. I may be distrustful of my goverment but I firmly believe in life and liberty for every one, the world over regardless of sex color height weight or hair style.
Regardless of why the civil war took place many died and resulted in a chain of events that ended for us the horror of enslavement.
I look forward to a brighter future.

You may not choose to acknowlege it but the southern flag is a pain full reminder of what their daddies dads dad had to endure...and continuing down thruough the years...until just recently.

What you need is a new symbol that reflects what you really want now. not what was then...

as someone said recently...the tag is dead.

The Confederate flag is only a painful reminder to those who are ignorant, it is not a hate symbol it is a battle flag that my ancestors fought and died under, and if i let it really affect me i do take offence to people calling it a symbol of hate or that nature, as for you keyes you are forgeting i have a mother too lol, i am german on my dads side but my mom's side has been here in North Carolina since the American Revolution.
