|
|
I am in Precalculus, and have a test this Friday on the chapter we are on. We are doing a review (that's graded) that's due the day of the test, and I'm in a pickle with this one problem. The problem is exactly out of the book, so here it is.
I've spoken to a friend who did that problem, and he said the answer was 200√3/3 (as in, two-hundred times root 3 divided by 3, which comes out to be 115.47005383793 pounds of tension when approximated). So now that I have the answer, I need to know HOW to do it for the test. Keep in mind, this is Precalc so we are only supposed to solve the problems using only Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, and things of that sort.
HINT: The 24 inches I'm told by my math teacher has nothing to do with the problem, it's just there to throw you off
AND the chapter we are doing is on VECTORS, if it helps _________________

solution coming...
its quick and rough and, although mathematically correct, its not perfect in notation.

Jfet beat me to the answer (and provided a much better way to look at it, I would have typed not scanned). You should state the answer as 115.47 lbs in each cable.
Jfet's answer is correct if you assume that the weight of the wire is negligible. _________________

and given the problem statement, this doesnt have to be an assumption. |

It's been 15 years since I took any calculus classes. Since I have applied it to nothing I have forgotten most of it. I do apply some of it to my work so it didn't all go to waste. _________________

That was a pretty easy straight forward problem, but I have taken two semesters of calculus based physics already. Next semester I'm taking statics which is exactly this kind of a problem except a lot more complicated. I can't wait. |
