How much do you guys depend on listening to footsteps and stuff when you play? Because I'm deaf in one ear, I don't have any sense of directional hearing. Theres some really obvious examples of when this messes me up, where say I'm standing somewhere and I hear gunshots but I don't realize they're coming from right behind me and I get killed. But outside of that type situation, do you guys pay any attention to where sounds are coming from when you play? |

Sounds are everything. Type stopsound , thats one word in your console and that eliminates all sounds except for what you need to hear. _________________

Most defintely. A lot of people use the stopsound command to remove the ambient noise(rain, etc) from the background to make footsteps and gunshot sounds easier to detect. |

Damn, that's too bad Grunty. That must be tough...
Everything that I do in DoD depends on what I'm hearing.
Ears and headphones > everything. It's a very, very important part of the game and being able to discern direction and distance of a walking enemy is more important than what gun you're carrying or how good of a shot you are. I used to think people were hacking until I learned how to use my ears. If I hear someone coming, I'll turn to the left, to the right in order to pinpoint where exactly that's coming from. Being aware of what surface you're walking on (wood is very easy to hear) is also important.
Good headphones, accept no substitutes. Maybe top of the line surround sound - depending on its quality could be suitable. But in my opinion, nothing can possibly beat the sensitivity of a good pair of headphones. |

Yeah I definitely use sounds to find out where things are and if enemies are approaching. I also use the map to tell if it's an enemy or friend. It's an important part of the game and the stopsound command could help you hear the right sounds better. _________________

Jeez, I was just thinking for a second Grunty... yesterday during the match and today my sound was unnaturally quiet for some reason, I couldn't tell what the problem was for the time being. Even though I could hear footsteps and stuff I was still mostly helpless until I actually saw the bad guy. It was some system setting that was resetted... and I fixed it now...
But I mean if that screwed me up a lot, I can't even imagine only being able to hear from one side. I find it disorienting when I hear too much sound out of one ear, it's safe to say that DoD would be much more difficult. But I know that you're a good shot, if I were you I'd stick with a rifle and I'd try to play over long ranges. You'd probably find that you'd have no disadvantages sniping until somsone decided to sneak up on you, but then again, all snipers are suseptible to that. I'd say stick with the rifle and use your eyes as well as you can.
If you're in a congested area and you know an enemy is close by, I'd try to be as quiet as possible - crouch walking and stuff - and wait for him to fall into your kill zone. In my opinion, the greatest handicap you would have is that other players (who use their ears well) will always have that one-up on you in close quarters. |

I played with a one sided head set for months I just bought a stereo headset and what a differnce it makes. Being a sniper alot ( I know NUB) you get whacked alot with shovels and and knives but now I have killed atleast half of the offenders that have tried to whack my head off as of late. _________________ <eVa>Simpleman-V$=<RIP> |

Geez, thats sucks Grunty. Sounds are very important in the game. However, I'm sure you can adapt with time, because a lot of people are doing well without using headphones.

That is exactly the way I play. Espcecially on a well-known map, and in well-known location, I can discern the type of ground people are walking on, and guess what is happening ahead of me. _________________ PJ --- ancient IDIOT with a rusty CROWBAR....

I usually use headphones and always use the stopsound command. It really helps on maps with rain. It is a completely different map when you use it on donner. It helps me get my melee on too, I can hear how far away someone is and time them coming through the door or around the corner, etc...
Where in Minnesota are you from??? I go to college in Mankato right now, but I live in a suburb of Minneapolis otherwise. |

Now that I think about it, I bet this is why my worst map is anzio. I just cannot do well on that map because people are always coming up behind me and I don't know it. Whereas flash is one of my favorite maps because when you hear something there is only one direction it could be coming from. Oh well, by the time I'm 30 (20 now) I figure they'll be able to regenerate the nerves in my ear with stem cells or at least give me a cyborg ear, then I'll crush all DoD opposition. Mwaahahaha!
