1. don't screw up
2. get a friend who is good with comps

3. find your hammer

Despite many myths, hammers actually cause damage to computers, they don't fix many computer-related problems.

well, i have to say, my computer never crashed after i beat it with a hammer. never had a read error. well for that matter, it never did anything...but it still performed better than one with windows on it.

Or you could save money and upgrade your memory and get a better OS like Windows2000 or XP. Your problem is more likely to do with ME than anything else.

Agreed. ME blows goats. I crashed 2 HD's before I finally dropped that piece of software feces.

Just upgrade and get a better OS.

And for other OSes if you use it to hit Blue until he fixes it....

REAL ADVICE:
Dell's are very cost effective at the $450~$1100 range but almost totally un-uprgradable. Home built systems are totally upgradable. I've built my own, and no manufacturer could have made it better for a more reasonable price. DEFINATELY check out www.newegg.com and totally trust them-but not their refurb'ed products. (But they tell you not to trust their refurb'ed stuff, so you can trust them, you just have to pay attention.) I've personally done over $1000 of business with NewEgg and only got hurt once on a refurb'ed power supply. And I was only out my costs to ship the item back, and 15% of the cost of the PS.

If you choose NOT to build your own, look at www.MonarchComputer.com because the will basicallly do a home-build for you, with all the parts you specify, and only charge you for the warranty and tech support. Since you choose every component, you can choose how upgradable your system is. The only minus is you pay for warranty/tech-support you'll hopefully never need, and you don't have quite as many options as building your own.

SUMMARY:
NewEgg = GODLIKE, moderate costs, requires computer knowledge & time
Monarch = reasonable cost, good upgrade path
Dell = INEXPENSIVE, almost no upgrade potential, questionable tech support

That's my $0.02.
