Sick.
I read in Philip Caputo's A Rumor Of War that soldiers in Vietnam had rations of some sick ass meat similar to Spam. Most of them said they hated it, but when they were shipped home they seemed to crave the asslike taste (addictive chemicals in it or something?). Vietnam vets were pretty much responsible for getting Spam off the ground financially. |

My entire family on my dad's side for the two generations before me worked for Hormel (maker of Spam located in Austin, MN) at some time. Although my grandpa was the only one who worked there for most of his life.
My dad worked there for a month where he and a buddy went through a whole vat of meat to look for a watch that was lost in it!!!! Hilarious. I think Hawaii by far consumes the most Spam per capita in the US.
edit: My grandpa was telling some boring stories last christmas. He said back in the 50's and 60's in December Hormel would slaughter donkey's and mix it in with all the meat. I asked him why would they do such a thing. He said, so everyone can get a piece of ass for christmas! |
