I just built a new system for myself coupla weeks back running W2K server. I should've benchmarked it before switching to XP two nights ago. I ran pretty horrible numbers through that 3Dmarks test though. Got about 3245 or something...

Currently running
AMD XP 1900
nvdia geforce 2 Ultra 64mb
Asus A7V266-E motherboard
1.5GB DDR RAM
Windows XP Pro.

The 3D mark score isn't that great of a way to bench your system, you can tweak your system to specifically test high with the program. People can get incredible scores with unincredible systems.

Anyways Pentiums are better for playing games, if that's what you use your computer for. AMDs are good for actually working. A real benchmark test would be to see how fast you render a scene in 3D with raytracing, shadow mapping, and all sorts of atmospheric effects turned on in 3D Studio max. Then compare that time with another computer that rendered the same scene.

My computer rendered a full 3D landscape landscape in just over 3 minutes, the same scene took a Pentium 1.2 2 days to render.

My system is
Duel 1.4 AMD athalons
120GB raided Hard Drive space
768RAM (3 256 DDR ECC Registered PC 2100 RAM)
Gainward nVidia GeForceIII 64mb (Core Clock speed @228MHZ and Memory Clock speed @501MHZ)
Running Windows 2000 Pro.

My next upgrades are going to be to replace the Tyan Tiger motherboard with the newest ASUS duel socket A board that allows overclocking of the 2 processors and comes with USB 2.0, plus it runs very stable and ASUS is a good brand. Also I'm going to replace the 3 sticks of 256MB ram with 2 or 3 sticks of 1GB ram, which used to cost $800 each but have been drastically lowered in price, for me .

Not the greatest gaming machine (that's for Pentiums) but it'll render the hell outta anything in a fraction of the time other computers do, and it's awesome for all the art stuff I have to do.

Actually the PentiumIV 2.0 GHZ outbenchmarked all other single processor AMDs on the Quake 3 bench test, and even outperformed my duel processor system and others.

It was a P4 2.0GHZ, nVidia GeForce 3 64MB, 768MB ram, 80GB hard drive. And for games it was blazing...for rendering 3D in 3DS MAX 4 it chugged and putted as it slowly ground through the calculations. My friends work for a computer company and they give them the parts to stress test and benchmark and write articles for their website about the systems, so I'm constantly hearing about which parts and such are good for performance, and since the other is in RMA (return merchandise) he knows what breaks and causes instability. Both of their machines are fairly impressive, and they are rabid overclockers.

Also with most games you can't use the Both processors. ID games are the only games I know that allow multithreading. So in TFC I'm only working one processor, in RTCW and Quake 3 Arena I get to use both processors.

Like I said though, this isn't a game machine, I put it together with the idea in mind that I'd be doing video editing, and 3D artwork. It just so happens games run on it too.

As for 3D Studio Max, it's a professional grade 3D animation program used by industries to make animations, one name of note, Blizzard Entertainment, makers of Starcraft and Diablo2 uses it to do most of their animation in game and cinematics. 3DSMAX 4 doesn't have a sharwared version and costs in the range of $1200.

meh $1200..ill jsut pick one up...wahts the site? lol not... yeh thats silly about the MP systems..i love how HL servers boast their DUAL athlon systems but it can only use one... if anyone has q3a to enable multiprocessor support you have to edit the line in your q3config to read <seta r_smp 1> where it is
