Ok, here's the deal. I'm going to be moving down to Guantanamo Bay Cuba late-ish April (For my new job, those who didn't know). I've been checking their services out, and I've been wondering whether it would be better for me to get myself one of those dish packages, with their brand of DSL, or go with the local cable service, and their internet. The reason I'm even bringing this up, is because the cable service has a 300Mb per month cap, and everything over that accrues a service charge (I'm not sure how much it is). This doesn't sound very fun to me, and since I can't even find out how much the service costs in the first place, I'm beginning to be more inclined to go with the Dish service. I'm just looking for input from any who might be in the know. What would my best option be?

The only thing I know about satellite service is they are bad for latency. For email and web they are fine, but usually not for gaming.

I've never had it myself, and I'm not sure about dish's service, but I knew someone who had satellite service and had those problems.

Now if it's true DSl then that should be fine.

The satellite looks bad and the 300MB cap looks bad, too.

Yikes looks like picking between the lesser of two evils...but I think I would go with the cable, hard to tell really, and it depends alot on what you like to do online, 300MB a month comes down to 10MB a day, I would start to monitor how much traffic I have a day, reboot each morning and check before you are done at night and try to limit the amount of data transfer and see if you can live with it, gl.

Well as Strongbad said I don't think that dish would work for what you need it runs about 79-99 a month upload is 56k and d/l off peak gets upto maybe if it is set right 786k. I used to work for them so I kinda know what there system is about. I know Directv was coming out with a commercial side with there satellite that was supposed to be anywhere from 3mb to 10 mb d/l and I do believe 1mb upload but who know's how much it would be. But for the most part on peak hrs. dishnetwork runs 250k - 386k

300MB max?? Steam alone was over 700MB download for the full install . If you download alot of music or pr0n then you would hit your max pretty quick

I have a friend who went with the dish. It was BIG BUCKS for the equipment but he had almost T1 speed for a bout 3 months then they took it away. Said he was just a beta test and it was only going to be available for Corporate customers.

Yeah, after checking with the dish network site, I don't think I can even get them there. I'm not really sure about that, cuz it wouldn't let me put Gitmo's zip code in there. Don't know why I wouldn't be able to get it there, since it's a satellite, the footprint should be big enough to cover the entire Caribbean region, as well as all of North America and Mexico. If someone who knows can figure out how to find out if I can get the dish down there, I'd appreciate it.

As for the Cable, I don't usually dl too much pr0n, but what would gaming online do to the cap? Yes, it is 300 MB per month, which as far as I can tell, blows Sully's nuts, which are very dirty (or so I've been told).

You are downloading when you play, also. They aren't files, just packets of information. I'm pretty sure that applies to the cap. Not sure how much, though.

hl mods dl at about 3-5kb sec. So you can play quite a bit and still stay under 300mb. Dish and latency suxor from all I understand of it. 500-1000 pings. :/

You mean latency right? That is pretty bad for latency.
