The story:

My friend and I were having fun with on old computer game (Might and Magic VI, hence the signature) and as we were saving the computer locked up and then my moniter died. It just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. So I rebooted, but then nothing worked. My keyboard and mouse weren't getting power and my moniter just stayed black.

I was given advice to power off my computer, unplug it, hold power for 20 seconds, plug the power back in, and boot it. If that didn't work, I was told to unplug the video card too after unplugging the power. If none if those worked, I was told to put in a new video card and uninstall my current drivers. After this advice I went to bed and planned on trying it in the morning.

I woke up this morning and booted up my computer just to see if it did the same thing, but now the problem has evolved into something new. When I turned the computer on it appeared to start normally. It told me it had overclocked and asked to boot on default settings, so I hit yes go ahead. It booted up into windows normally, but as soon as the regular tray items started, it told me "new hardware found" and listed about everything in my computer.

Now my keyboard and mouse do not work at all (they have power though). I tried the power off for 20 seconds with video unplugged, but that didn't change anything. I can't change drivers or get into my bios because my keyboard is completely useless. Any suggestions?

Some specs if they help:

AMD Athlon 2200
512 DDR RAM
ATI 9800 Pro
40 gig 7200 rpm HD
PCI 512 Soundblaster
Windows XP

Wow that's bad. Have you tried a different keyboard or mouse? Or maybe it's the mother board or something.

If it is a USB keyboard, try getting one of the old fashioned OS2 kind. I found my machine had trouble recognizing my USB keyboard sometimes too. If it works with an older one it might allow you to access the BIOS at least.

Good luck

I tried changing out my moniter, mouse, and keyboard, but no go there. My keyboard is an old $5 one, so it doesn't plug in USB. My mouse was USB, but I got a PS2 converter for it and still no luck. All I can really do is turn my computer off and on Could my motherboard just be fried?

You can try resetting your CMOS. Usually a jumper on mainboard. Unplug power cord, change jumper for about 10 seconds. Put jumper back to normal, replug power, then boot. Are your fans spinning? P.S. fan, cpu fan, fans on chipset if they aren't passive cooled? Any post errors? Beeps on boot? Did your momitor actually die? Or is it flashing or staying amber on the LED? Your MoBo could be trashed with all the different symptoms you have had.

Thank you for the advice all, but yes, my mother board was trashed. I bought a new ABIT NF7 and I've had no problems at all yet. Bleh, I'm adding FIC to my list of mother boards to stay away from along with ECS and Matsonic.
