[Shacknews] What kind of anti-cheating measures have you created for Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and do they take care of all the well known cheats like aimbots, wallhacks and/or the OGC Hack?
[Erik Johnson] Going into detail about what we are working on with respect to cheating isn't something we really want to do, but we are aware of all of the current cheats, and we will be making sure they are all covered when we release the next update.

[Shacknews] How often do you expect to update the anti-cheating software, seeing how people often quickly find new ways to cheat?
[Erik Johnson] There are two schools of thought when it comes to solving the anti-cheating problem. One way to attack the problem is to create the "silver bullet" that will make it impossible for a specific cheat to ever work. An example of this would be the method that we used against the speed cheat about six months ago.
The other method is to enter an "arms race" with the cheat authors, where you make it increasingly difficult for cheat authors to trick the software into doing something unintended. Once the cheat author has spent the time to get their cheat to work, there is already a new release out that returns them to square one.
We're going to be adopting both methods to stop cheating.

GameSpy: Cheating has become pretty prevalent in Counter-Strike games. What sort of steps is Valve planning to fight this?
Erik Johnson: There are a bunch of boring technical ways we're going to stop cheating online, but the most effective way will be banning cheaters from playing. Initially we'll be banning them for a short period (less than a week), but if someone continues to cheat we will ban them from playing online permanently.

GameSpy: Any suggestions for players who want to deal with cheaters? Is there a way to ban these players from ever playing at all?
Erik Johnson: With the next update, we'll have this capability in place.

HomeLAN - What can you tell us specifically about what Valve will put into future Half-Life updates to combat cheating?
Erik Johnson - Specifics of how things work aren't really something that we'll go into in detail, but I can give you an idea of how things will happen when we do release the update.
The first step is going to be collecting information on how many people are cheating at any given time. This will probably last about a week, so we have a good idea of the size of the cheating community. Server operators will also see this information, so they will be able to take individual action on their servers.
Once this short data collection period is over, we'll start banning cheaters.

Well the fix for speed cheats never worked. There are still many speed cheaters, some who may even be in our clan. Just think how many times a HWG out ran you when you are a spy or med or SCOUT. |

Quick question,
It seems to me that CS has a more prevalent cheating problem. Is there a reason for this? or am I just sheltered on these wonderful (nearly) cheat free servers?

CS was a user-created mod, so it probably doesn't have the anti-cheating stuff in it that TFC does
