After being cut down time after time coming around corners, I would always wonder just how they knew I was coming.

Could it be that I pull 10 FPS? Maybe. H4X? Well, not always.

See, DOD has a ton of ambient noise. Gunshots, mortar blasts, people screaming, etc etc. None of which is actually happening. Through all of this, it is extremely hard at times to know what is going on and where.

Yet, some people seemed to be able to hear exactly where I was at all times. Then one day Blue showed me this helpful little tip.

While in game, bring down the console and type: stopsound
Or, you can just type it into your config.

This turns off all the ambient noise. All you will hear is actual gameplay events. I use it and now I know how some people would always know where I was. They could hear me! You can hear everything from footsteps to the sound you make when you jump. You can even hear people reloading.

So, to even the playing field for us all, I thought I would post this.

Give it a try and see if it helps you.

Or you could just buy headphones

I don't know if people do it in Dod or not, but some people played with edited sounds in TFC. They might turn explosions down a bit, and make footsteps extremely loud, so that they could here where somebody was.

Headphones actually made things worse for me.

It was all the same jumbled noise, just louder. Never tried headphones with stopsound though. . I have a surround sound setup as well and headphones kinda kill that whole experience for me.

That and the fact that my wife would get erged that I wasn't answering her when she was talking to me.

Just between you and me. . . . I heard her fine.

I use stopsound.... I use headphones....

when I do not use headphones, I don't hear anything coming my way. Furthermore, headphones give you a better sense of the direction of the sounds.

You would be surprised how much I learned to recognized the little "hmmmph" sound when somebody jump an obvious obstacle (for exemple, when jumping to get to the balcony in Avalanche. This IS an very important edge.

The ears is 40% skills in DoD. So use them

Yeah easy to do for TFC I dunno about DOD I never really enjoyed the game so I never bothered to customize much.An edited/turned up fall and jump noise really makes it easy to hear bunny hoppers, people landing from rocket jumps/concs,and people coming down elevators

Shouldn't editing sounds that way be considered cheating?

Buy some better headphones

Like paddy said, headphones give you a better idea of where something is coming from. Some of us are too poor to afford surround sound systems, so headphones are the next best thing However, headphones also give you the ability to have a mic on the side (headsets), and generally don't disturb others around you.

Yes, I am the h4x.

You're not editing anything. Just turning off ambient sound.

If you want to call that cheating, so be it. By that rationale, anyone who tweaked their sounds would be cheating.

I think he meant what I was talking about KRG. If so, then yes, I would consider it cheating. However, there is no way to prove whether someone has done it or not unless they confess outright.

That's a tough call Stevo.

I know in TFC, some use different sounds (not default) for individual events. I can hear the Canadian national anthem everytime I cap if I want. Only I would hear it though.

One can only assume that some utilize this ability to "tweak" individual event settings to their fullest in DOD as well.

I would not say it's hacking. I've met people who could hear a fart from 50 yards out but probably couldn't hit a wastebasket with a ball of paper.

I am all stock. stopsound is my "script" lol.

When 1.0 was out, I used the sounds from 3.1, as I thought they were better. For one, footsteps on floorboards were louder. When Steam was out, my sounds disapeared, and I never bothered to get them again..... so the footsteps are fainter... but I still rack up kills as before....

So I don't think editing these sounds is a big help
