I just finished playing my first song all the way through!!! Granted, it's not like a classical piece or anything (it was Everlong by the Foo Fighters), but I'm still pretty happy that I'm able to do it. I'm also coming along very nicely on Johhny Cash's version of Hurt, but there's only so many times a day I can play that song.........
Anyone have any suggestions on songs that are good for a novice like myself to learn? This would be for the guitar, just in case anyone was confused
BTW, I just bought my second guitar last night, mainly cause I'm tired of playing with an upside down guitar (I'm a lefty ). I had to buy it online, since none of the stores around here, or within a 60 mile radius has any lefty guitars. Here's a pic of my new one.

That's a perty paint job.
What is that? It's like a cross between a PRS and a Les Paul. Not a fan of Les Pauls but PRS fiddles make me all giddy inside.

Anything by Nirvana is generally easy to figure out and fun to play. I recommend Bleach. Once you are good, you can move on to Slayer and the like.
I also recommend learning guitar tableture. You can buy entire band albums of tableture at music stores.
Here are some cool links to help you out;
Learn Guitar Tab
Find Guitar Tab
Note that Olga tends to be someone's "idea" of what the tab should be. For definitive tab, you'll have to buy an actual published book at the music store. Once you learn tab, I recommend Guitar World Magazine. It's a great source for new guitar tab and lessons.
It's fun to use someone elses music to warm up. I often play Smashing Pumpkins to warm up with chords and Slayer to warm up on fingering.
Oh oh, and I hope you bought that guitar from Musician's Friend. . . ahem ahem. . .

Yeah Musician's Friend rocks! *
Unfortunatley, doesn't look like we sell that guitar.
I've been playing guitar for about 9 years, never took any lessons. I just like to find tabs for songs I like and work on getting them somewhere close. I also like to improvise a bit putting serveral ideas together.
I mostly play acoustic so I tend to like songs with acoustic parts(Dave matthews,etc).
A great acoustic learning song is Blackbird by the beatles. Actually, a lot of songs by the beatles are good to learn. And don't forget Led Zepplin. I think you'll find that a lot of famous songs use fairly simple chord progressions.
I also recommend learning some fundamemtals, like chord progressions and some scales.
* I work for Musician's Friend. So I may be a bit biased. |

Yeah, musician's friend was my first stop, but unfortunately they didn't have the one I wanted, so I had to go somewhere's else on the net It's such a pain in the ass being one of those "militant" lefties. My mom and aunt were like, "Why not just play right handed?", to which I replied, "Dammit, because I'm left handed and it doesn't feel right!" Bah!! They'll never understand
The nice thing is that my friend has really been helping me out alot, mainly with figuring out chords and stuff, and giving hints on picking, and what types of things to practice, instead of just sitting there strumming like a madman! Mostly I've had to teach myself though, and I don't think I'm doing so bad! _________________ Under construction!!! |

Anything by Greenday is playable by a five year old.... using a two string power chord.
Also, I would have played right handed if I were a lefty. I help teach quitar, and anyone who comes in and say they are left handed we will talk to them about learning right handed. Because it will be so much easier on them for the quitar alone. When you learn guitar you have to teach both hands something, why not just teach them right handed. It has always worked out. _________________
