It makes no difference at all as to weather or not the jobs are unskilled or not. People should not have to work for less money than it costs to live regardless of the skill level of there job.

They do have the option to get a job somewhere else, enough ppl leave and go elsewhere that employeer will eventually have to hire at a higher wage, or suffer turnover which most do not like. PPl cant just go around dictating what they WANT to make from an employeer. Why did they take the job in the first place if the wages were a problem?

Should of added, they should petition the state to raise the minimum wage then.

Meat cutter at the GROCERY STORE is skilled labor..... I worked at the grocery store in highschool, one of my classmates worked in the meat dept. He had some training on a slicer, but not a whole lot of special training. The cakes came from Cakes LTD and the 16 year old girls that handed them over the counter didn't need a whole lot of training to perform the task. There might have been a sandwich building class but I am unsure.

My grandfather worked for Usinger Sausage from the time he stepped off the boat at age 16 till he retired 45 years later as plant manger. He was on the cover of Esquire mag, and his pic can also be found in Time. To this day they still sell his picture on T-shirts and the like. Long story short he came to this country and learned a trade, a skill that back in the day was skilled labor. A gorcery store meatcutter doesn't even come close to what a skilled butcher at a meat plant can do. You can be skilled at the gorcery store after a 45 sec. video on using the meat slicer and the overwrap machine.

I think unions are a good option but they aren't practical for every job. Just imagine if they guys working at your soft-cloth car wash were union. You would be paying 45$ for a regular wash just so they can obtain the standard of living that they desire. And I guess it would be skilled labor cause those vaccums and towels can be tricky if in unskilled hands There is always going to be the need for entry level posistions (minimum wage) in this country. Otherwise none of us would be able to afford anything, movies, groceries, gas, oil changes, fast-food.

The more I think about this, the more I think those people should move on to something else. If you can be replaced at your job by someone still in highschool after a 5min. interview your obviously not that skilled.

well said Vicoden. Since our trade is one that takes skill, you would be suprised how many ppl come in that have none. That would be hardly any. We are willing to train ppl, but the problem is ppl dont want to get out and actually learn something, they just want stuff handed to them like they deserved it from the beginning. Its hard for a business to give all that to ppl when you can hire someone out of high school and in 5 minutes know your job just as well as you know it. Not to hard to stock shelves ya know.

But the whole strike I feel is ridiculous in the first place. I don't mean to offend anyone, but these jobs are unskilled labor, plain and simple. They already had adequate benefits but they wanted more while the stores maintain that they wouldn't be able to afford it. I know lots of people that worked at these grocery stores but were forced to quit their job because they had no income, and then didn't even agree with the strike. I am curious what the percentage of the workers actually agree to this. And btw BRN, I have no choice. It is the only grocery store near me and I don't want to drive an extra 15 minutes

Vicoden wrote:
I agree with you mulisha that grocery store work is unskilled and more of an entry level position for high school kids and 35 yearolds still living with their parents. I was quite surprised when I first saw this story on the news, in my part of the country gorcery workers aren't union. I think unions are great for the skilled worker but for something like this I think its a far fetch that they will get what they want, their "trade" is too easily replaced (see first sentence). But like I said before I think there should be as many options as possible for employement. Thats what made this country great, If this country wasn't for free thinking and diverse opportunity think of where it would be right now.
excuse me...being a safeway meatcutter i take offense...unskilled...you go behind the block then damnit! and btw all of these companys are safeway companies and it is gradually working its way eats...in march we will go on strike...want to know why...because they are lowering out pay to minimun and getting rid of all benifits! retirement health ect...they are even going so low as to take retirement away from those already retired...now knowing this is the strike still annoying you?? sorry for the inconvinence but our welfare is at stake

we want more??? the only reason we want more isbeacuse they decided that employees were the biggest liability of the company...they arent losing money at every fortune 500 meeting they are bragging about the money they make...they brag about all their recognition...but at our union meetings "oh we are losing so much money...well im sorry mr byrd that your pay check was only 1bil last year...and that no exaggeration...he makes 1billion+ and complains about our money??? BS!!!

plus they are destroying the company in the process...because he wants his check to be 2 billion...quality sucks! safeway used to be the best quality out there...sorry our prices are high...but we dont have losers working here that dont even know where the milk is...we have friendly SKILLED emplyees...our meat cutting is top notch...not this two bit crap i find in some stores...i honestly can sh** better steaks than some othe rplaces here...but now...safeway is sending us crap products and expect us to keep marketing high quality...then they complain that sales are going down...y has there stock gone down??? not because of increased pay to the employee but because of decreased quality and an unchanged market strategy...you cant keep saying "giving our best" when the product is gradually turning into food lion crap im sorry we inconvience you but take the extr 15 minutes to go to the other store show them that they are crapping on several qualities that are being lost nowadays...quality of product, quality of service, and employee care...then your company will thrive...all was good till the founder of safeway died...and we dont hire out of high school...it takes you to know someon in the sotre to get you in...There used to be waiting lists miles long just to see if you were eligeable to get in...and if anyone has any more questions about this...please feel free to pm me...or reply to this thread..rememeber our jobs and our yes...our lives in a way are at stake!

well being as im smarter than the average person its easy for me to learn no seriously though...while you can cut meat in a short while...it takes a long time to get it a)perfect, it take about two years for it to stop looking like crappy looking crap but a life time to get it immaculate b)know what to use it for and all the different recipies inwhich you can use it, everyday you learn something new, as long as you can pay attention....but...as it takes SKILL to pay attention...then you can see starting off you already need skill...then you need to be skilled at the knives the bonesaw hand wrapping grinder and the list goes on

and yes matt my work still looks like crap...i mean just today i lost about 100 dollars in meat and thats actually good for a beginner

Are we forgetting about N.A.F.T.A, what about our presidents plan to give American jobs away to non-Americans (Mexicans who will come and work here without being a citizen) I feel that over the counter sales is what should be considered non-skilled labor rather than targeting individuals like Butchers, Pastry Decorators. Honestly, can you say that you could do it as well and make a living at it ?

America needs to unify as one and quit selling out to other nations. Point blank!

The reason for the looks are because when you shop there you are inadvertantly saying "screw you workers". You may not realize it. The workers/union are the ones getting screwed.

Uhm, no offense, but generally speaking a person DOES need to buy food.

The whole strike here in California is because they are making te workers pay more for health benefits...not that they're doing away with them. And yes, the average grocery store worker is unskilled labor. They apply without much previous working experience and just work their way up. Try telling somone who has gone to post-secondary education for 6 years to become a teacher that their benefits are gonna cost more. That happened just this year with my mom. Did they strike? No. I know people who work at grocery stores and they are mostly pissed at the strike because they are now out of a job. What has it accomplished?
