OK, so how would I know if I was having a vid card problem? Would it freezing up during gameplay, then coming back, only now with the worst possible graphics ever be a clue? It seems to like to do this alot during any HL mod, with DoD being the worst. It has also done it whilst running Splinter Cell. It does a nice little freeze for about 5 - 7 seconds, then comes back (almost like a bad lag spike), then the graphics go to crap, with little boxes all over the place, semi transparency over some objects, and a very pielated look in general. I'm using an XFX GeForce FX 5600, WinXP OS, 1.5 Gigs RAM, WDC 80 Gig HDD, plus one more 80 Gig HDD I can't remember.
Oh yeah, every time this happens, I have to restart to get it back to normal. _________________ Under construction!!! |

Sounds like it to me. I run a Geforce 3 ti something or another, so I am sure you are running the same drivers as me in XP. I have not experienced any of these type problems through steam. You are not overclocking are you? I had a fan go out on my earlier Geforce card and didn't realize it. Experienced some of those problems. The card I ahve now uses a heatsink instead of a fan. You can try lowering your clock settings from default and see what happens. If the driver doesn't allow for that, there are some 3rd party tools that will let you do it. You can also try reducing your AGP 1x/4x/8x or disable fast writes through bios. See what happens. _________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

that's exactly what has been happening with my other computer, which would be juva's computer, it does the exactly thing what Az said, only after the hardcore lagspike, the graphics don't change, they're always bad quality not the little boxes but just overall bad looking and can't read the text very much. but usually it just freezes up and doesn't come back you have to turn it off and witness the "blue screen of death" - krg
no update to be installed, no idea what kind of vid card, but it's straight from gateway and haven't touched anything cept the RAM, but i need a new one for it...any good sites or recommendations?
don't have much money tho...who doesn't? _________________

No idea if this can be related to your problems but: sometimes mine makes all kinds of changes to the options menu in steam. ie: I loose opengl, resolutions, etc. The pc does this on its own and have to reset them. Try check them _________________

Open GL itself might be causing the problems although the only time my graphics did what you described was during a lan game.
Reputable sites for decent vid cards Directron or don't laugh a site called Dealsonic. Only hassle with either of these 2 sites involves security concerning credit card sales. |
