This is true for US-V and probably the others as well.
You would call the invitation process random (there are alot of factors, too many to list or think of). Usually, you have to play on these (theville) servers for 3+ months and show that you are a team player, obey all the rules (except for the silly rule #10 "Dont kill blue") and post some in the forum.
Over your time here, other people here can learn about you (and you can learn about them) and (they) decide if you would fit in their clan/guild. Then if the conditions for invitation are met, they will contact you.

Another thing about at least one of the multitude of groups that calls this place home.
US-V does not recruit people that are in other guilds/clans at the time. It just makes things simplier and we are a simple kind of people. (or at least I am, so Powder and Jfet tell me.)

i was playing jag-d...for some reason one of my team mate was all white...so i took some screenshots of it and i colored it blue..dont get me wrong..i wasnt hacking or anything....
