|
|
‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, when all through the Desert,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a lizard;
Unlikely a snowfall, unlikely a rain,
Would moisten this Land when St. Nicholas came.
The children were all bedded down for the night,
Dreams colored with candy, surprise and delight;
And mama sans apron, I sans my Stetson,
Had just settled down to watch a good Western.
When out on the Desert there rose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter;
Away to the window I shot like a Hare,
Parted the drapes to see what was there.
The moon on the crest of yonder Gila Mountain,
Lit up like a vision that toward me was bounding,
And what I saw gave my heart such a pang--
‘Twas a miniature stagecoach and eight tiny Mustang;
With a little old driver buckskinned and booted
“It’s St. Nick!” I yelled out; I hollered and hooted.
Swift as the arrow his chargers they came
And he steered and cheered and called them by name.
“Now, Sunrise! Now, Red Rock! Now Mead and Mojave!
On Tumbleweed! Cactus! On, Sage and Agave!
Through the corral! Over the fence!
Now Giddyap! Giddyap! Dash away hence!”
As sage leaves before the sand storms fly,
When caught in a whirlwind, lift to the sky,
So up to the Joshua tops the steeds they all flew
With a stagecoach of toys and St. Nicholas too.
Midst the howl of the Coyote and wind through the firs,
Came the neighing of horses and jangle of spurs.
The hooves and the cartwheels were on my rooftop!
The down the chimney came St. Nick with a plop!
He was dressed in leather from toes to hatband,
And his duds were smothered with dust and with sand;
With a saddlebag of toys toward me he strode,
Looking more like a prospector who’d been mining his lode!
Cheeks ruddy as rock from the Valley of Fire;
Nose red as a berry in holly attire;
A cherry mouth that could tell a good yarn;
Such a straggly beard! Like straw from the barn.
On an old pipe he’d suck and he’d blow,
While smoke circled his head like a twirling lasso;
He’d a sun-weathered face, a burro-like belly,
Which, when he laughed, rocked just like some jelly
He was delightful, funny, an elvish Mark Twain.
I laughed to compare him to such a fine name;
And his twinkling eyes, his exuberant charm,
Soon gave me to know he meant us no harm.
Quiet as a Paiute he circled the bed,
Filling a wish from each little head;
Then winking his eye and raising his thumb,
Up the chimney he left, just the way he’d come.
He mounted his stagecoach, to his team yelled “Yahoo!”
‘Twas the last that I saw of this dear Buckaroo.
But I heard him call out, as a prospector might,
“HAPPY CHRISTMAS, Y’ALL!” AND Y’ALL HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!”
Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday - Whatever they celebrate! _________________

That was fantastic.
It reminded me of home (which is in the middle of the desert). Thanks Little Miss Hurt! _________________ Under construction!!! |

Woah. Nice sig.
.....
Oh yeah, the poem is good too. Makes you wonder what a guy who's lived in Florida all his life would react to snow. Or a Santa not in a bathing suit.
[Surfer Guy From Florida]: Woah, what's this white stuff, brah?
Surfer Guy From Florida touches the snow
[Surfer Guy From Florida]: Woah, it's like...like...not....hot. Woah. |

Heh, growing up in So Cal, I had never seen it snow before I went to Afghanistan. I have seen the snow, I've gone skiing and stuff, I'd just never seen it actually falling. I damn near busted my ass watching it fall cause I was too enthralled to pay attention to the icy ground! _________________ Under construction!!! |

Yeah it's weird seeing the snow fall for the first time. You see it all the time on TV, the movies, and gamed, but then you really see it, it's like . _________________
