|

hey guys,
im looking towards building my own computer to handle games like World of Warcraft, DOOM 3, and Everquest 2...any idea on how much that would cost?
I would like for it to be at least 2.5 GHz, with 1024 RAM, around 40 gigs, and a nice video card... thanks for any input! |

You should be able to build a good to great gaming computer with raid for under $800.00 dollars. And that's using top of the line parts if you shop around the net. |

Yea its not very hard to build a computer. If you really want to build one check out the PC builder on http://www.ncix.com/pcbuilder/ . Its really good, you can choose what you want and you can then go around to your local PC shops and find the parts your looking for. Also PM JohnDoe he really helped me when I was trying to figure out what PC I wanted.

Also check out www.newegg.com and www.zdnet.com for prices and reviews, both great sites.
I'm also putting together a gaming machine (probably ordering parts next weekend). If you have questions about what specifics you might need, feel free to PM me.
As for your initial question, I'm planning on spending about 700, but I'm reusing an old monitor and vid card...which cuts down on the price quite a bit. |

Why not just use the HD you have now as a slave and still gain the 40 gigs extra with the new HD?
That's what I did with my old 80 gig. Now I have 120. |

AXP's are priced nicely and they perform well. I oced my 1700+ (1.47GHz) to 2.2GHz and its rock solid. Make sure to get a nforce2 board though and you will need dual channel ram at least pc2700, but getting 2x 512 should be cheaper than 1x 1024. Hard Drives are dirt cheap right now. I saw an add for a WD1200JB (120 gigs, 8MB cache) for under 100 dollars on newegg (thats under $1 a gig, a good deal by any measure). |

I Suggest ATI cards because my friend got the leekd demo of doom3 and it was using glide2x which is soemthing the gay nvidia corporation does not handle (i might be wrong about if the game uses that tho) So stick to ATI cards for ATI is also recommended for HL2 just some food for thought.
ALSO WTF is raid? can someone elaborate on what it does please? _________________

Not quite sure what RAID is (is it a device installed, or is it just a feature?), but I know its purpose
On every motherboard, there is two IDE channels, and each channel can handle two IDE devices. Basically RAID gives you more IDE channels to put crap on. So, you could have three hard drives and three optical drives _________________

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) - A group of two or more hard drives which provide increased performance with various levels of error recovery and fault tolerance. Can be implemented in software operating systems, by software with standard disk controllers, or designed in a disk controller itself.
Want to build a kickin system, then you need raid. Only Asus and Gygabyte (I think) offer true raid motherboards that fully give you a performance increase. You can install raid on about any motherboard using a pci card but you won't see much of a performance increase. |
