When I think about the difference between creation and evolution, I can only surmise they both make perfect...(non) sense!

Actually Paddy, what you're describing is not evolution, but rather natural selection (not the mod!) In this case, the Hemoglobin-S gene makes the species more fit to survive in a hostile environment, and those without it die off. Evolution is the process of mutation over tens or hundreds of millenia, where natural selection can take less than one to take effect.

i was wondering where paddy was going with that post

but anyways the only reason i brought this up is because in one of my classes we have a discussion on a topic the teacher picks and it was on racism. i was just trying to figure out why ppl think they are superior to another race when in fact we are all the same species i mean we all have our str and weakness and it is best suited for our environment. but back to the many question i finally came up with is why is tehre racism i know why ppl say they hate a race or why they think they are better but i just want to know why human beings think they are better than another race. does evolution cause this to try to diminish the population of humans on the earth down to a number that would suit the planet better. is it part of a gene that makes us warlike? i mean i have many more theories but i am starting to get sleepy cause its 230 am so if i get up and have time ill write down some more. night all and thanks

Natural selection and evolution are closely linked. You can't have natural selection without the acquisition of mutations. And mutations cannot be kept in a population if they are not transmited.

Actually, this does not only apply to racism.... it applies mainly to differences. I cant tell you that french and english canadians at some point in history were disliking each other very much, and we are both white. Sometimes, the way people are living their lives, their culture, may seems alien to another culture, and you distrust that. Black and whites were another exemple.

But even more than that, you have to look into history. African blacks were seen like non-human, barbarians, by the british nobility when they explored Africa. Of course, civilisation was less advanced with them, so it did not help the perception, and white men saw themselves as "superiors". Then there was the slavery in America. It didn't help either.

Racism seems to me like an attempt at superiority. Throughout history, and still today, we have seen many a people try to gain control, take power, and generally be a ruler of some sort. Discrimination altogether is a powerful tool to do so.

Slavery gave the feeling of power to the masses. Without work, or payment to the employed, people were able to gain a hefty profit. People also had the ability to command others without fear of prosecution.

People also use racism as a method of understanding, rather than actually search into the subject, even though such thoughts have been proven wrong today. When people first ventured to Africa, for example, they saw the Africans as barbarians, as Paddy pointed out. Immediately, people assumed that the Africans were inferiors to themselves. How could something that hunts with a spear and has such poor living conditions possibly be equal to themselves? The notable difference in skin tone also fueled these ideas. I can only assume that they asked themselves, "Why would God create an inferior people that look the same as ourselves?" Having creatures such as the Africans as slaves did not seem morally wrong to them, so they shipped them off to be used as in that manner.

To me, it all comes down to corrupt superiority and leadership.
