ok i was reading vtecs post http://www.theville.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14933
and a thought came to mind one that i have thought of b4
when i was in my senior survey last year in high school we learned about cultures and what not but one interesting thing came to mind when were would learning about evolution. why are there so many different races? i mean dont get me wrong i have no problem with any other races but out of what i can think of why are there different races wouldnt have evolution just had one race for one environment. im just asking this question because i thought it was wierd the way that nature has changed things. i dont really get it but i was just wondering about ur oppinions
if i didnt clearly post what my question is i guess i dont really know how to explain it in written then because i mostly type what comes to mind and typing is slower than thinking _________________

Genetically we are one big species. There are no specific genetic markers defining a race. Races are only based on skin color, and some facial traits.
Mankind adapted depending of the geographic area they were living in. Basically it all started from Africa, and over the course of 100 000 years or so, they migrated toward different continents. _________________ PJ --- ancient IDIOT with a rusty CROWBAR....

I've read/seen on TV that it takes about 60,000 years to change a humans skin color due to climate. How they know this I do not know.
but underneath that skin we are all basicly equal assholes. _________________ Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. |

What they said. Humans and other animals evolve according to their given situation. _________________

These changes between races are called variations. It's the same with all species, which have small adaptations to their environment. VP pretty much sums it up in one sentence. _________________

i always tohught racism was a weird term... you can ahte dogs or whales or soemthing liek that, but we are all th ehuman race, different cultures and ethnicities but all the same race. which leads me into a funny story about how a friend of mine got called racist by a dumb girl because he said " puppies and kittens are more cute than cats and dogs" .... i wanted to smack them _________________ |

I say the egg came first. Because I know I didn't evolve from a chicken.

Ummmm . . . . . I don't believe in evolution. I think they are barking up the wrong tree. I believe in an Intelligent Creator. _________________

You're talking about the creation of the world and all creatures on it. We're simply talking about evolution in a more modern age--such as camels to llamas, and the variations of the already evolved/created human.
[edit] Maybe modern isn't the right word After humans already populated the earth, anyway. _________________

Here I will tell you the story of the Hemoglobin-S allele, which is a spectacular exemple of evolution in population.
The Hemoglobin gene when expressed is important for the transport of oxygen. A single mutation in that gene produces the Hemoglobin-S gene. Simply put, the human genome has 2 copies of the same gene, one from the mother, one from the father. So, people having 2 copies of the Hemoglobin-S gene suffers from sickle cells anemia, and are not going to live long. I will spare you the molecular details explaining why. People having only one Hemoglobin-S gene does not suffer from that disease, because they have the other healthy gene.
Now, the proportion of African people having one copy of the hemoglobin-S gene is very high, which is anormal since it is lethal if an individual gets it from both parents. However, the reason why this happens is because this mutation protects from malaria! Indeed, malaria is eating the Hemoglobin gene product better than the product of Hemoglobin-S, and moreover, malaria infecting cells producing heamoglobin-S are eliminated quicker. Thus, children having one Hemoglobin-S gene are more likely to survive to the age of five, and have more chances to survive and have children than people carying two healthy copies.
Hemoglobin-S mutation is thus prevalent in all regions where malaria is endemic. _________________ PJ --- ancient IDIOT with a rusty CROWBAR....
