This was a post at the Half-Life 2 fourms. I thought it was a great analogy and sums up my feelings on this matter.

P.S. Hey Rob its been a long time, good to hear from ya. Hope the family and you are doing well.

While I do work in the Information Security industry, I do not have any affiliation with Valve or Vivendi Universal Games, so we are not involved with this investigation. It's up to Valve to know how to secure their Intellectual Property from being stolen and released.

When you see an advance copy of Windows under a code name, Microsoft can tell what project group leaked the code based on the name of the project. That's just one way of figuring out who leaks intellectual property like that. I can't really imagine how leaking the engine code would cause their product to be delayed, unless something in the source code would expose the game to more hacks. They probably will have to do a security analysis of all the exposed code to mitigate the risk of hacks being developed for it.

Hence delaying the game right? Or its probably just another reason why they can hold it back to make it better?

Why doesn't valve just hire some 15 year olds to roam around the internet all day looking for hl2 hacks and source code download spots, then track them back to their sorce?

Because they can't spare the money Chan. Everyone knows how hard pressed these guys are for cash

While what the leaker did wasn't correct, he did make a few good points. The main one being that valve has a bunch of idiots running the show. They may be game making geniuses, but they sure do lack intelligence when it comes to pleasing the crowd in between hit game releases.

I didn't mean to make you feel like an idiot GP and Im sorry but man you gotta watch what you say about stuff like that it can get you into trouble. I agree with chan - they dont even need to pay the 15yos all they gotta do is give em a free copy of the games or something like that. Im sure if their HL fans they would gladly help.

I don't think it needs to be 15 year olds either. Finder gets free Valve games for life would get a lot of us spending a little time looking.

Screw Valve.
THey have lied to us for years about non existant games. They repeatedly set release date's that they have no hope in hell in making, then thru miscomunication there publisher rats them out and instead of come clean they stick to there lie. The release date gets close and all of a sudden its put off because of a hacker. WTF? The game is no where near complete regardless of the leaks HL2 would not be on store shelves. So then they lie some more and say that its just the code that got leaked, almost challenging the hacker to release the files they knew he had.. Here's a small quote from a .nfo
Quote:
To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking
| action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve
| has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to
| understand it wasnt finished yet.
To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how
| much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything
| just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do. |

I wasnt going to post this next part but I'm on a little rant so screw it. Think you need to be a leet hacker to get info from valve? Not.

Boy do I feel like an ass...

I hope I did the right thing damage-control wise (I asked him politely
not to publish/share any of this, and he agreed).

The Friends session below started 20 seconds after I approved
'lombardi@valvesoftware.com' as a friend, so I assumed it was Doug.
When you see the subject the irony will kill you (or me, more likely).

> hello mate

thoughts on that? I can't see to get a response from anyone at the
moment
> chris says:
> That happened to gabe - someone created an account in his name when we
reset the database. I had to reset the account password so Gabe could
use it.
> chris says:

it was one of the features that Rick cut when Muru left.

addresses in our database are useless or obscene or both.

Right now the crippling problem is lack of bandwidth. I've been causing
an (unpopular) stir on that, saying that we should add peer-to-peer now
not later (as we had planned). Gabe seems to agree and wants to see an
immediate plan to do that. It's a huge amount of work and will occupy
the team for a long time -- IMO we _really_ need it for HL-2 launch to
succeed on Steam.
> Doug says:
> So is Steam one of the major reasons Half-Life 2 was delayed? Also
will we be seeing peer-to-peer in the future?

Obviously I got totally suspicious right here. So I sent Doug an email
with the exchange so far, asking to confirm if it was him. Then VPN and
wemail died _right_ after I sent the email, so I couldn't check for a
response (I just found I got an out-of-office auto-reply).

So, unable to check email and fearing the worst...

chris says:
Did you get my email?
Doug says:
Nope
Doug says:
try again at munro@halflife2.net please?

[me: Aaaarrrrgghhhhh! Oh Nooooooooooooooooooooo!]

Doug says:
something meant to be coming through?
Doug says:
Come on Chris you can't leave me like this
chris says:
OK, so I realize that you are not actually Doug. Nice stunt I'm
asking you to _not_ share the comments which I made here in good faith
(believing that you were Doug). They are matters internal to Valve. I
think you've proved your point very nicely, and I'd appreciate your help
with this.
Doug says:
ah damn
Doug says:
all this juicy info and I can't do anything with it ;(
chris says:
You've just succeeded in making an excellent point directly too a Steam
developer -- I hope that would make you happy
Doug says:
Sorry I thought you realised I was the thread starter and that Doug
didn't have an account here :[
chris says:
No, I'm simply not allowed to make public comments -- you'll have to
talk to the real Doug Lombardi for that. Obviously I'll be sharing
this with him -- please email him at... wel you know the address
Doug says:
Heh so I'll get a very harsh slap if I should publish on the web then?
chris says:
That would not be helpful -- please take it as read that you have made
the point you intended to make. Please don't publish anything from this
exchange.
Doug says:
I had the perfect exclusive then
Doug says:
Any chance you could speak to the real Doug or Gabe or someone and get
them to send me some kind of info I can publish?
Doug says:
You sure I can't publish this?
chris says:
I'll certainly ask them -- and they'll see the full transcript of this
exchange. Obviously I can't promise anything, but you've certainly got
my attention anyway. Can you tell me anything about yourself?
Doug says:
I'm an handome young... ok maybe I shouldn't go into that
chris says:
>>You sure I can't publish this? Please don't. I said things that I
simply would not have said under any circumstances if I'd known you did
not work at Valve.
Doug says:
I run halflife2.net, and try to keep up with the latest info
chris says:
Well, you succeeded in giving me a near-death experience. I'll send all
this to Gabe and Doug and see what they say.
chris says:
Got to sign off now.
Doug says:
I'm very sorry for misleading you
chris says:
No problem (cool stunt - first social engineering hack I've fallen for).
Just please don't publish or share any of this.
Doug says:
I wont although I will be bursting to over the coming months
chris says:
Thanks - much appreciated.
Doug says:
my email addy is munro@halflife2.net should Gabe want to send any legal
threats etc
chris says:
He's more likely to threaten me You know how immenseley valuable
the community is to Valve. BTW I just looked at your site; thanks for
your support for HL-2 -- I don't think you'll be disappointed
Doug says:
Just blame it all on me, it was afterall my fault

GG valve pull your head out of your ass and breath already.
And for all you "leaker" haters, he didnt do shit to you, you would have no HL2 regardless. Atleast with the source code out there maybe we will finally see a linux port......

Isnt going by what leaker said the same as going by what valve has said? I think it is - have you actually seen the SC? If not then he could just be lying just like valve is.

Will you release them on time though?

Frankly, I don't understand all the fuss about that hacker causing delay in HL2 release. When HL2 was announced in april for september, I (and a lot of others) predicted it was impossible to be released on time. Valve has an history of delays since the beginning, HL was released one year late and no hackers were involved... And what about TF2.... we all saw those Computer Gaming World-like magasines full of pics of TF2, one of them even proclaiming it the game of the year IIRC.... how can people still believe Valve is beyond me.

Btw.... is WON still around....? Wasn't it supposed to dissapear 2 weeks after Steam? We are already 2 weeks late....

Wow, that is unbelievable. A hacker impersonates a Valve employee in order to interview another Valve employee about the hole in the system allowing people to do exactly what the hacker is doing, and the Valve employee doesn't realize a thing! Wow. The irony is hilarious.
