From what I hear the hacker stole enough of the code to just replace the games characters with new images and create a totally new game at the expense of the owners

With the code someone can alter the game itself to cheat and wouldn't have to create an addon? That would seriously suck. Imagine Half Life 2 finally being released only to discover that it is impossible to stop cheaters. Counterstrike is bad enough, but at least you can discover the cheaters and ban them. This sounds pretty serious to me.

This sounds bad. I don't understand why people cheat anyway. Are they trying to prove something to the other players?

A group of students here have been working on a mod for HL@. Its WW2 era and called 'Band of Brothers', but havent seen any beta for it yet...still in the skining phase I believe. Who knows, maybe they'll finish it before the game is actually released.
