Hmm. Ive been looking at getting a new video card recently - for HL2 and also for my game (probably a HL2 mod since the other game engine I was going to use fell through) - NOTE: thats where Ive been for the past bit. I was planning on getting a XFX GeForce 4 MX440 64MB Video Card or a XFX GeForce FX5200 128MB DDR Video Card. Im trying to get something stable - to me ATI isnt stable because I have had bad experiences with them in the past - video card that will run most games well - I will go higher in price but it will be longer before I can get the video card (and thats a problem since I am coming soon to the programming phase of my game). What would you guys recommend?

Thanks,

I have a ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 128 MB. It runs great. By the looks of the benchmarks, ATI is the way to go for HL2.

I have the Nvidia GeForce 4 card and it works well. I heard ATI was going to be better for HL2, though.

According to all the benchmarks I've seen so far the ATI 9600 pro is the way to go. It can run HL2 with full DX9 support (Nvidia cards need to run a mixture of DX8 and 9) faster than a 5900 ultra . I used to feel the same way as you about ATI....but but they have really improved the quality of their hardware AND their drivers. In the end it all boils down to what you feel most comfortable with....

Processor: 800 MHz
VC: 11MB Onboard (Intel something or other)
SC: Dont know
RAM: 256 DDR
MB: DOES have a free AGP slot but I don't know what type it is. Probably Intel.

I would suggest getting the cheapest DX9 card (ati 9500 or 9600 stay away from 9800 pro and NV5900 ultra) if you are not planning to upgrade the rest of your pc. Right now your processor will limit you even on the lower end DX9 cards...this means the vid card will be waiting for info from the rest of your system. I would also think about upping the memory to at least 512mb.

your cpu is going to hold ya back. A 9500 Pro if you could find one would be plenty IMO. Runs all games I've played very well.
