I'd like to be able to tell if there is a problem with the motherboard, so I can take it back to the store which I bought it from. Are there any other tests that I can run on the hardware?

I was reading some posts of other issues with your mobo. There was one that kinda gave me an idea of a different place for you to look.
The nforce chipset includes onboard sound. Aparently, there are some sound chip software settings you should look at.
One comment was that if you enable the 6 channel sound the mic port becomes an output.
Another comment memtions the digital out settings might affect the mic.
Give the sound effects program that comes with the mobo a good look too.
