That's a tough one, brother. It all depends on the lady in question. Some just want something-- anything that confirms your commitment. Others want a rock that they could use in an emergency to choke a rampaging rogue elephant. I only had a temp job when I proposed to my wife, so I could only afford an inexpensive ring on credit. Now that I have a steady income, she still wears it out of sentimentality.
Two things to remember. Diamonds right now are a little cheaper because political strife in some African countries are allowing downright criminals and despots into the diamond trade. However, some of these diamonds are being taken by brutally killing the people that mine them. You could look at an engagement ring of another stone, but to some women only a diamond means commitment. You just have to figure out what she wants.
On the plus side, if she doesn't mind a different stone, you can get some huge stones for the price of many unimpressive diamond rings. A friend of ours has an enormous Amethyst ring. Amethysts are relatively inexpensive. It doesn't look like an engagement ring, but it looks nice.
Good luck, man.

Remember this the Diamond is not really as valuable as the market price asked. In fact it is not the rarest gemstone, actually rubies and emeralds are the rarest stones. The big cartels have just made diamond expensive by controlling how many are released to the open market. Not onlu that but they have purchased many areas in the world and closed them off to any mining. A good example is in Arkansas where ther is a huge deposit of diamonds. Deberrs did a real sneaking thing by donnating the land to the US Gov for a park with out giving up the mineral rights. You can go there and pick up surface stones or dig by hand to a very shallow depth and keep what ever you find, but they will be very small.
I guess what I am trying to say is be a smart shopper and maybe find a large ruby or emerald.
I know that all gemstones you buy caused many hardships for those who actually did the work to mine them while the cartels make all the $$$$ |

That's all true Bada, but tell a woman you aren't going to buy her a diamond ring for political reasons and you don't always get the best reaction.
But hey, she's dating Tommy Chong, right? So maybe she's more sensitive to politics. I know Cheech and Chong were politically aware, at least on the "legalize drugs" issue.
Anyway, Good luck Tommy!

Not that I am advocating that you buy here, but Zales Diamonds has a good website to look at rings. http://www.zales.com. Even though I am like you Tommy, I would have to say from observation that the engagement ring should be simple. But I have also seen that the engagement ring has been the wedding ring as well. I don't know good luck.
