damn Im gunna have a BIG dog if it is Bada... I got one question for you guys. We got her at the age of 8 weeks - she and her brothers and sisters (12 I think) were at a pet store. Anyways, we know shes the age she is because she teethed right on time. But when we took her in for her second Parvo Virus shot (I believe thats what its called - it attacks young dog's nerves and gives them seizures and stuff) the vet told us not to take her out for walks and such until she was 4 months old (and she had her last Parvo shot) and he also told us not to take her near other dogs because of rabbis and such. Anyways, we did as he told us. She was good - we taught her a lot of commands (she knows: sit, stay, come, lie down, paw and high five[she actually gives you five with her paw]). She crate trained in about a week and was fully house broken in about the same amount of time. We took her out for walks - shes was very skittish though (afraid of loud cars and trucks ESPECIALLY BUSES). Shes gotten over that now though. But because we didn't socialise her with other dogs she hasnt had a lot of experience with them. Thats fine and dandy for some dogs but not with border collies. Every person we've talked to about border collies has said that they are a socialization project. This means that they don't necessarily take kindly to new things (ie dogs and people walking by on the side walk).
We started to use a gentle leader. It turns out that it was the worst thing we could ever do - it traumatized her (because she has such a small muzzle she can't use one - the part that wraps over her muzzle would go into her eyes, and irritate her). My mom and I now believe that this is the main reason behind her current (and only) problems left. When she sees another dog she acts aggressive. Pulling on the lead, barking, and so on. NOTE: her tail can either be up or down - depending on the size of the dog. Now, I highly doubt that she would bite another dog - shes been around two really nice labs and she wouldn’t even bite them (she had a good run and play though). We are trying to socialize her and make it so that other dogs seem like a good thing - when we see one on a walk we feed her treats (before she reacts with barking) and try to walk past. Sometimes we can do this successfully and sometimes we can’t. We really want her to be good with other dogs. And so we’re trying really hard to socialize her as much as possible - taking her on long walks and such. But it doesn’t seem to be working. Would anyone have some tips for helping us socialize her? Shes normally a gentle, kind, playful dog but when she sees another dog (like a jackrussel) she goes bananas… I don’t get where the aggression comes from or how it started (though I must admit that its getting less and less each time). But my mom is almost to the point where she would get rid of Sophie rather than keep her - she doesn’t like her reaction and says its only getting worse but that’s just the way she is with every bad situation. So could anyone whos ever owned a border collie, or any other dog with such forms of aggression, have any tips for socializing her?
Thanks,

DO you have any frineds with dogs? If so, you might want to try getting together and having "play time" with both your dogs. It's a little more useful than just walking your dog in crowded areas since the other dog would be there consistently. I have a german shephard/coyote mix, and when she was young, she was one hell of a loner. We had trouble with her reacting badly to strangers (human and animal), but she eventually mellowed. We watched a friends dog while they were away on vacation, and that seemed to help. _________________ Under construction!!! |

Yes, we have some friends with dogs. Though most are smaller than sophie... She doesn't like smaller dogs very much. Although, those two dogs that she went and played with were bigger than her and she knows them. Prehaps I can talk to their owners about coming over every once and a while to see if she'll play with their dogs.
Thanks alot az . This is her last big problem (actually she is kind of a loner similar to your dog and she doesn't take kindly to new people in her life as well) prehaps your solution will work.

I had a half lab half huskie dog his name was Duke. He was a smart doggie I taught him to sit,stay,shake(hands/paws)Lay down, fetch, and jump. The cool part about jump was that he would do it wherever you wanted (mostly) You could even pat your chest and say jump and he would lunge at you and kick off chest (kinda stung) luckily he only weighed about 50 pounds so it wasn't enough to knock you down. We think the neighbor killed him but im not gonna baseball bat somebody unless im sure _________________ Over your dead body! |

How is that a problem? Mine does that, it even comes down to the beack with me It's sweet!!
I've got a beagle, he's about 2 years old, his name is Rusty. He is THE best dog!!
One thing I hate though, his eyes!! You're like, "Go outside Rusty", then he looks at you with his big brown eyes, and you're like, "Come here!!" |

Yeah Kason, I have to say, if I found out one of my neighbors killed my dog, a Baseball bat massage would be the nicest thing I gave them. I used to have a pair of pit bull pups, one got parvo before it's shots were finished, and the other mysteriously disappeared, and someone poisoned a friends rottweiler, who was the 2nd coolest dog I've known (his name was King Solomon fer chrissakes). _________________ Under construction!!! |
