|

I'm doing my best to sort out the new problems with playing my games on XP. My in game system lag is truly unplayable.
I could run HL on 98 in OpenGL and it ran smooth as a baby's bottom. When I tried to run OpenGL in XP, it said my video card did not support it. So, I figure I need to update my video card driver in this OS. So I did and now it runs in OpenGL! Yay! I think I got the latest driver but I'm not terribly sure.
So. . I've gotten this far. Only I now have a new problem. Now, every two or three steps the game freezes for a nanosecond and then goes back to normal. It's like a cd skipping effect and it's really annoying. All other system lag seems to be gone. If I can fix this new problem I might be able to play effectively again rather than just trying to find Borg for a fair fight. j/k man
Anyone know why I am getting these freezes?
I'm running an nVIDIA Aladdin TNT carp @ss video card.
Any help is appreciated. Thx. _________________ Recipient of POTM award

Well, I fixed the problem with the split second freezing.
Then, it started completely freezing every 5 minutes or so. Then I got booted to a blue screen of death. After reboot, I could not even stay in a game 2 seconds and my comp would freeze and I would have to hit the reset button.
So, I went looking for yet another driver. When I installed it, it says, blah blah this driver is not approved by Microsoft. . blah blah. Which is funny because I got the NVIDIA site link on Microsoft.com.
When I tried to install, it popped up with this message;
Quote: | The file "aliagp.sys' on NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Driver Library Installation Disk 6 is needed. |
I had no idea what it was asking for so I canceled out. Now, I can no longer join a server in OpenGL because my video card does not support it. . . .again. . .
I'm about ready to toss this &$&*@%! machine out my window! This is getting ridiculous and I have spent countless hours and dough trying to fix it. I'm about out of patience. |

That's too weird.
I'm using XP, Open GL, with an ASUS card. Not a peep of trouble here. How old is the card? _________________ Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.

Now I'm no computer expert, but I would say there's a video card/xp conflict since your card is an old TNT series. It may have run smooth with 98 because the older OS was compatible with the video card. I ran into similar trouble with my old mouse. I've had no problems with my Geforce4 Mx 440 or Radeon 9800.
Here is also a link that might help you.

I think you'll like XP once you get it working. It's memory management system is much better than 98's. _________________

Thx for the link Chen, I'll give some of that a try tonight. I'm running an old TNT2.
The irony is. . I have a GForce 4 sitting collecting dust. When my friend upgraded, he gave it to me. But alas, I do not have the PCI slots to support it. I'm all AGP. Or is it the other way around. .
I r teh not smart guy. |

You should get a new mobo that has agp support instead of fighting to get a pci video card to work. You can find a decent one probably under 100$ Less if you don't mind a low end board. _________________ The most hated.

Unfortunately, I have an all in 1-der. I can't just replace the mobo. Everything is attached to it. I truly just need to buy a new computer. But I thought I could get this one wroking again. I may be able to. But the outlook is not very promising. |

Well, I followed all the instructions and unfortunately, my system is now even worse than before. Now, when I boot up, I get errors saying it is unable to find blah blah.dll etc etc.
And the screen shakes so much it almost makes you want to yack.
I'm done. I give up. It can not be repaired. If I had not lost my copy of 98 and XP (don't ask how) I would do a full format/reinstall. It's just not worth it.
I have now begun to drink heavily. It's Friday, my bass player just flaked out (separate incident) and my computer is for $h&%. I'm going to go pet my stupid cat and get faced.

If u get a new computer not get a over priced name brand computer, just get one built by a local shop or build it yourself, package computers = problems _________________ Death Before Dishonor :: Semper Fi :: 1st Marine Division 3rd Tracks Bravo Co. |

I have never had any problems with my Gateway Only when I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled everything did I start having any problems. They have been very minor compared to KRG's problems though .
Sorry to hear about the problems KRG. I know how frustrating it is. I've had problems in the past with other machines. I hope you either get yours figured out or have great luck with a new machine. _________________

It's been my experience that big name system computers are well designed for specific usage, just don't expect to have much of an upgrade path available. That being by design, so you'll buy another system in a couple of years. _________________ Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.

You may try to find the chipset drivers for XP. The file it says you need sounds like a chipset driver. |
