OK so here's my problem: whenever I host a game online (whether it be half-life, unreal tournament, diablo 2 etc) my friends can never connect. I give them my ip, yet they can never connect to my server. Also, I can never upload files to people on msn. Is there any way I can mess with my network configs to fix these problems?
Plz fix my internet! kthx. |

Sounds like you have either a hardware or software firewall thats blocking those ports. _________________

i have the same problem cause i run through a router. since the router assigns each additional cpu an ip address that might look like 192.29.1.1.
thats not your real ip thats just the router assigned one. you need to find your real ip and i believe there was a post a while back with a website that tells you it.

I got the real ip, it was the one that did not start with 192.168.xx.xx.
I believe it was something along the lines of 169.253.xxx.xx |

In the router you will have to map the real IP to your computer's IP so the data packet knows were to go. There should be a manual for this on Linky's website to show how. Linky also I believe has some feature that helps with Half-Life gaming, but that was a long time ago. |

Also the Linksys router has a hardware firewall built in. IF you find out how for it to allow diff port acces pls post. Alot of use em due to they are cheap and great for a home.

this could also be the prob. check the cfgs for your server. somewhere in there you will find a line like: sv_lan 1 change it to 0 and you will be good to go. _________________ PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF =US-V= & VILLE $UPPORTER |

The easiest thing to do is set your hosting computer up as the DMZ comptuer which basically routes all incomming traffic not requested by the other computers on your network straight to the hosting computer. However, you lose the protection of hardware firewall by doing this. I would personally recommend you turn it back on when you are done. If you are a bit more tech savvy you can probably map certain ports (such as 27015) to your host computer. However, this is a bit iffy as some consumer level routers do not include UDP port maping. _________________ The most hated.

Thanks for the posts guys, but I think I figured it out heh. Last night I was curious if what I thought was my real ip really was the right one. Turns out winipconfig was wrong, I checked the site www.whatismyipaddress.com and it informed me of my real ip. I still had problems creating a server, so I browsed around their forums and found a post with step by step information on how to disable "wan blocking" and how to open up the ports I need to host a game. I'm pretty sure I got it working, all I need to do now is wait for a friend of mine to come online and I can test it out.
If it still doesn't work I can try out that dmz feature. |
