I saw that Stupid marched, and I did too. Anyone else here at the Ville march in Drum Corps, or even heard of it?

I've marched in percussion before and know it takes a lot of skill to get into a good drum corps. Which one were you in? Maybe Cavaliers or Cadets?

I was the alternate for bass 6 in the Scouts Bassline in 98, so I marched with Pioneer instead, and then Colts in '99. Both years I marched Baritone/Euphonium, after my back went out from the weight of the bass drum in the preseason (36" YAMAHA beast). Some of my friends at school still march with Cavies, Crossmen, Cadets, Blue Devils, and Scouts.

I wasn't in band, but I played the violin in orchestra. I remember those trips, too. One trip the bus breaks down in McAllister, OK on the way to St. Louis, just as a tornado is coming through. The oil line had busted spraying oil all over the engine. We got on another bus full of band kids from another local HS. The cool thing about being in orchestra compared to band was that on the bus trips boys and girls could sleep on the same bunk. Many a cozy nights on those trips.

I played serveral percussion instruments in my highschool marching band, snare, timbales and the xylophone. We took the state championship in my senior year. The thing I miss the most is band camp.... did some serious partying there and sex was rampet... yummy!

My favorite memory is going out to Denver to play at Mile High, and our Cook Truck caught on fire. This community in Nebraska rebuilt it for the cost of the parts in about 4 days, and it was better than before. That was pretty cool.
But....
If you thought band kids were bad, you've never seen crazy until you've been on tour with a Corps. I had to wear headphones at night in the gym so I didn't have to listen to people having sex in the next sleeping bag...
I remember that one night on the bus....oh wait, that was every night on the bus. (I miss my seat partner ) How some people were able to rehearse for 14 hours the next day is beyond me. Ahh memories.

Don't let a wack instructor ruin your desire to march. Most Div II and III corps will teach you to march, and play any instrument. You'll come back to school tan, toned, and you'll be a better player on your instrument than all those high and mighty *concert* musicians. The hardest part of getting into a corps is the first step of applying. All it usually takes is one phone call or an email to the director or caption head. If you're willing to work hard, they're usually willing to have you. Most corps are still looking to plug holes clear into July. (one word of advice....don't go to that Corps from Rockford/Loves Park, they're awful to their members, once they have your money) Good Luck to you. Snaggle

Some of your kinky stories almost made me wan't to get back in band, but then I slapped myself. Marching band wasn't one of the best expierences of my life. Not to discourage anyone from marching. This may be just my school and is just my opinion. There was too many fundraisers, whiny directors, and retards who didn't try. What was the worst though was practice everyday lasting 2-4 hours in the 110 degree weather. Our director was incredibly harsh and all the girls cried after he yelled at us for something. People join band for at least one of three reasons. The social aspect, the marching competitions, or for the music. Our director tried to drill it into our heads that we were there to march, and nothing else was acceptable. He screamed a lot of BS and made us do pushups when we talked on HIS field. He knew how do design the drills but had all the students had some major beef with him. He shaped the band into something very respectable though and it was kinda fun to know that people thought we were among the best in the state. Then we got beat by the best I've ever seen, L.D. Bell. After watching them lay the smack down on us and remembering how hard I worked all year I saw no reason to continue to put up with our arrogant director. I was a good player and they didn't wan't me to go, but I really enjoy having some free time on my hands.
