I often wonder about the origins of peoples nicks - especially the more bizarre ones. Hope this thread continues with more submissions as it will turn out to be interesting I bet..

Origins of Axa - when I was just a young lad of about 8, growing up in Cape Town, South Africa (we are talking 1978 here !!!) there appeared in our nightly newspaper, The Argus, a comic strip about a mythical female warrior called Axa, who basically hacked and slashed her way through alien worlds with nothing other than a broadsword, continually losing both her fur loincloth, and flimsy bikini top. Naturally I fell in love with her instantly....and the rest is history. If you ever are in Charlotte, North Caolina and you are passed by a '96 Thunderbird with AXA plates - gimme a wave !!!!!!

Well, my story starts something like this:

"I am a very old man; how old I do not know. Possibly I am
a hundred, possibly more; but I cannot tell because I have
never aged as other men, nor do I remember any childhood.
So far as I can recollect I have always been a man, a man
of about thirty. I appear today as I did forty years and
more ago, and yet I feel that I cannot go on living forever;
that some day I shall die the real death from which there is
no resurrection. I do not know why I should fear death,
I who have died twice and am still alive; but yet I have the
same horror of it as you who have never died, and it is
because of this terror of death, I believe, that I am so
convinced of my mortality.

And because of this conviction I have determined to write
down the story of the interesting periods of my life and of
my death. I cannot explain the phenomena;I can only set
down here in the words of an ordinary soldier of fortune a
chronicle of the strange events that befell me during the ten
years that my dead body lay undiscovered in an Arizona
cave.

I have never told this story, nor shall mortal man see this
manuscript until after I have passed over for eternity. I know
that the average human mind will not believe what it cannot
grasp, and so I do not purpose being pilloried by the public,
the pulpit, and the press, and held up as a colossal
liar when I am but telling the simple truths which some day
science will substantiate. Possibly the suggestions which I
gained upon Mars, and the knowledge which I can set down
in this chronicle, will aid in an earlier understanding of the
mysteries of our sister planet; mysteries to you, but no
longer mysteries to me.

My name is John Carter; I am better known as Captain Jack
Carter of Virginia. At the close of the Civil War I found
myself possessed of several hundred thousand dollars
(Confederate) and a captain's commission in the cavalry arm
of an army which no longer existed; the servant of a state
which had vanished with the hopes of the South. Masterless,
penniless, and with my only means of livelihood, fighting,
gone, I determined to work my way to the southwest and
attempt to retrieve my fallen fortunes in a search for gold."

~ Edgar Rice Burroughs

Ladies and gents, this is the first portion of the "Princess of Mars" written by none other than Edgar Rice Burroughs. Personally, I think he is the best Sci-fi writer who ever lived, but some would say that he was before his time. Most of you may know him better as the man who created Tarzan; another excellent read...

Seriously, If you enjoy to read check out the Gutenburg Project's selection of Edgar Rice Burroughs' stories. They all are spellbinding!

Anyway, as you can tell I like this sort of thing so I figured that it would be an excellent idea to utilize one of the greatest warrior's name in a game I enjoy so much. I try to act and play as I would expect JohnCarter to be... Anyway, thanks for your ears on this one! See ya around...

Kewl! Mine is actually from a game called syndicate wars, great game by the way. In the game the harbinger virus freed people's minds from an all-controlling computer system that the protagonist is trying to overthrow. Since quaking days and up until about a year and a half ago I had unknowlingly, been misspelling it Harbringer. Ooops... I changed it eventually to harbinger, which, in the dictionary means a bringer of change. It's one of those things that you spend a few mins deciding but will probably never change

BTW-JohnCarter, is that pic in your signature from heroes of might and magic? I'm probably way off but never hurts to ask.

well, my name is derived from my parents........well sorta. Basically, i'm half chinese and half white. I don't really consider myself white, so i like to call myself chinese. Hence the name "twinkie", which is yellow on the outside, and white on the inside. get it?

The origins of me? Well I used to bounce around all the servers of TFC all the time and changed my nick almost nightly to suit my mood, I've been dozens of names across dozens of worlds, some have called me "Cheater" others...."Network Admin" when I failed to be killed, and whipped the everlivin crap outta them. Some of the Nicks include Steel-Oblivion, AllYourBaseAreBelongToMe, Invader Zim, SkyQuake to name a few, I occasionally would visit AvantiVille. Then I changed my name to the way you see me now and started playing AvantiVille more often and then AV2 opened and I played on that, It got to the point that I was doing really well and ranking on the top of the list for the match for kills and people started to recognize me from game to game, so I stopped changing my name and stuck with YourPowersAreWeakOldMan. "Your Powers are Weak old Man" is actually a quote from Star Wars, Darth Vader said it to Obewon when they were fighting on the Death Star, to which Obewon replied, "But if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can imagine" which was just old dude stalling so he wouldn't get whacked. Vader, or course, whacked the old fool and killed him good. SOoo..I thought, Hey that's a bad ass quote and it fits the situation of TFC. So I typed it in, It perfectly fit the space for a nick on the score screen in the game too. It's Like it was meant to be. So here I am, and thats my name.

By the Way Har8inger, that appears to be a Boris Vellajo (think I spelled it right) painting.

Ever since I was a young kid (5) I've had terrible vision w/o glasses and when I'm not wearing them I probably have worse vision then the real Magoo. Also being a old timer (36) figured Magoo was a fun name that kinda represented me (but I'm not bald yet ). I few folks have commented that it doesn't seem right to Frag the ol' Magoo, so make sure you let me by when I'm running for the next cap.

Well, anyone who has a NIntendo 64 surely knows about the game Perfect Dark. But for those of you who don't here it is: In the game, the main charcter is Joanna Dark. about half way into the game, she rescues an alien from Area 51. This aliens name is Elvis. He is from the race of the Maians, not the indians, the aliens. Theyre sort of like the Greys, with big heads and eyes, no nose, and a small body. Anyway, this alien helps out quite a bit, and has lots of cool alien technology. So thats how I got my name. Oh, and Your powers, I was considering going by Invader Zim for a while, but I stuck with Maian. I love that show! Theres even a guy in NSA named Gir. LOL. But sadly I work for Area 51, so now I must kill you. (loads slienced gun)

My name is derived from both a video game character and from an old ninja assasin's name.

Why no Harbinger... But thank you for asking... It is actually a painting by the great Frank Frazetta(fantasy artist extrordinaire) and was the cover of the second book in ERB's series, Warlord of Mars...

I think webster states it best:
A : One degraded from the normal moral standard
B : a sexual pervert
C : one showing signs of reversion to an earlier culture stage

Nicknames? You mean John Doe isnt my real name? I'm confused!
Actually when I started playing TFC I used the name CaptianHowdy, goes back to a song with these lyrics.

Oh, it's so nice to see you all inside my dreamy little world
And it's so nice to be with all you lovely little boys and girls
Make yourselves comfortable, my place is so devine
Don't you think I'm wonderful? Say yes! You're on my time

CHORUS:

Stay away
From Captain Howdy
Stay away
From Captain Howdy

Don't try to leave, the doors are locked and only I have got the key
Forget the windows, they're nailed shut and boarded up so you can't see
You'll love the light show, oh, I'm sure you'll think it's swell
When they go off, you're welcome to my living hell

REPEAT CHORUS

Solo - Eddie

Come here, my sweet
Let me help you with that
There, that's better

I'm overjoyed at all the games I'm playing here with you today
But I'm so sad the party's over and we can no longer play
You think you're going home to your own little bed
But that's impossible, you can't sleep when you're dead

REPEAT CHORUS (three times)

Of course if you know this song then your also a Twisted Sister fan and another SMF!

As I became a better player my friends and I often noticed all the dead corpses littering the ground during a game, we could never tell who they once were so we referred to them as John Doe's. I decided that since I usually was that corpse I had better change my name to John Doe. Now, as I improve my playing I find that I am creating more John Doe's than I am actually becoming.

Does that make any sense to you all? Should I just go back to Captain Howdy?
