I would build a hutch that is about 4ft off the ground using wood and (excuse the pun) chicken wire on all it's sides. Make it about 5ft long with a top that opens out of reach from animals. See I had problems years ago with a neighbors dog trying to get to the rabbits that I fed to my python, after awhile of not being able to get to those fuzzballs the dog eventually gave up. Don't hurt the dog cause that will only lead to you waking up early in the morning only to find that your attack chicken turned into KFC. Don't let your pet turn into a Attack Chicken <Click

Chickens attack toddlers in California
Henpecked by angry citizens, the Sonoma City Council calls foul on free-roaming birds.

May 26, 2000 | Ah, Sonoma, Calif. -- rural town-cum-tourist spot. Grapes drip from the vines, mom-and-pop companies proffer organic goat cheeses and the leafy town plaza, lined by gift shops, features meandering chickens.

Everything was fine until a couple of bad eggs began acting up. According to a Reuters report, several of the plaza's chickens, mostly roosters, developed a bad attitude and began to take out their aggression on toddlers.

After what the news service called "a flurry of attacks on neighborhood children," a particularly incensed rooster jumped an 18-month-old boy without provocation, and the battle between chickens and parents took off.

Although the attacks were attributed to too much testosterone -- not enough hens among the roosters -- Sonoma County parents were unsympathetic. Monica Garcia, the mother of the assaulted toddler, told Reuters, "It's not charming when you have to see your baby attacked ... Seeing the blood going down his face and seeing him screaming ... I can't sleep at night."

The brutality of that attack was the last straw: The Sonoma City Council promptly banned chickens from the square.

"I don't know if it's possible to envision a roosterless plaza," said Councilman Ken Brown, "but I have to tell you, when it comes to a question between a kid and a chicken, it's the kid."

I tried the mirror before you said it and he didnt pay attention.I really don't know if it's legal here or not dosen't matter though I got him for a pet. He dosen't attack people though.

Also today when I got back from town my chicken had a bloody head I asked my brother and he said my neighbors(you know him species )dog was in the yard snapping and barking at the pen and the chicken was busting his head against the side trying to get at the dog and cut his head up in the process. Well the neighbor has been warned to kepp his dog out o my yard before and he didn't listen and now my chicken is hurt.............well you see its illegal to shoot guns in city limits(and illegal to keep livestock) and if I shot in city limits my dad would take my guns away and probably tan my hide real good so neext time rufus comes in my yard hes gonna get an arrow for his mischief.

Try putting a blanket over it's cage like they do parakeets. If the chicken does not see any light then he should not crow

Ive got a piece of paneling over one side to give it shade.

This morning I went out refreshed his water and fed him and also had to clip of a feather that was stuck to a bloody piece of skin on his beak.

Dad decided I can't kill the dog(because our neighbors a pyscho and might try and burn down the house) but I can still slingshot, pellet gun, kick, and if the dog bites me I can kill it.

I know that dude, I'm just yanking your chain I hate that the simplest of thing's like owning a chicken comes with problems. The chicken vs dog epidemic has been plaguing peeps for thousands of years so don't feel as if the dog has something personal to grind with you and your bird

If it was me I'd let the dog keep coming up to your cage and then one night switch the bird out with a full grown skunk. End of story... #Crazy
