I know danno beat this like a dead horse but since I installed hlbooster I was getting terrible choke on my server. played with settings in game on the server and on my client and it ended up client side like he has said many many times. my cl_updaterate was set to 60 and I was getting around a 60 choke under heavy battle. Now its set at 20 and almost all choke went away. Play with that setting if you have probs.
To see choke and loss type net_graph 3 in your console. Also you can change your cl_updaterate in the console. |

I typed in net_graph 3 and it shows my choke around 70-80 on average. How do you change the cl_updaterate? I went to console and typed in cl_updaterate 20, i dunno if that is right or not....anyway it didn't do anything to the choke rate. My ping on the server is always in the 40-50 range, sometimes less. So I guess I don't understand what any of this means, except I know I want to have lower numbers...heh |

Blowns right... Although if one setting doesnt work keep trying others.
Start at like 20 and go up by 5 or so and see when it goes away. Although im told the general rule is to keep it close to what fps your running at. Yea, like that ever works.
just pull down the console and type:
cl_updaterate 20
then see what it does. If that doesnt help, when the console is down just hit your up arrow and you should see your last command, then just hit backspace and increase it by a few until it goes away.
Also try the same with the cl_cmdrate, just up this a little bit and your lag should get a little better.
Just remember just cause one setting works for me doesnt mean the same will work for u, you gotta play with it a bit. |

I thought you were supposed to lower those settings to make it better. I lowered it and it seemed to help a little. I could be wrong, though. _________________

Anywhere from 20-50 on both those settings is good it depends on how many people are in the server and your computer/connection mostly. _________________

the default cl_updaterate and rate are set up for 56k, if you have cable or dsl they should be -
rate 20000
cl_updaterate 30
just type that in the console. _________________

Will give them a try and let you know what I get...Also, do you have the numbers for a T1? I don't get any choke, but if I can tune this PC a little more, it couldn't hurt. _________________

If anyone is having latency problems, you should at least try the suggestions here...
I cut my latency by one-third when I changed my cl_updaterate to 30. It's currently at 20, but don't see any difference from 30.
Also, and this is the biggest benefit, I can shoot people again!!!
I know it sounds funny, but when I went to cable, all of a sudden I had to shoot behind people to hit them. Often time, if I shot the model, I actually missed.
But once I change my cl_updaterate, I was actually getting better response from my shots.
Thanks, Blown.
Oh, BTW, I am pinging as good as TV1 now...on TV3. _________________
