I was wondering if I could find out what sort of connection theville servers run on and there aprox monthly bandwith usage.
I have a duel p3 1 ghz server that is doing nothing right now and was wondering what kind of connection would be needed |

TV1 & TV2 run on 2 W2K workstations at our office connected via LAN to a T1 line. The machines are P4 & P3 with lots of ram. |

The bandwidth consumption for 1 & 2 average 4-6 gigs a day during the weekdays when they are only on from 5pm - 8am.. an average weekend day when they are on 24 hrs is around 10-12 gigs a day.. I hope that made since.....

I know that TV5 is on a dual OC3 lan, connected to the outside world with a T1 line. I have no idea what kind of traffic it brings, but I'm sure it doesn't dent the bandwidth too much

TV4 runs off a PIII 500 workstation with W2K Pro and a T1 connection via the LAN. Bandwidth is prob the same as TV5.

How much faster is a t3 than a t1, and is it possible to have a double t1 or t3 connection?

A T1 is 1.5 mbs per second and a T3 is 45 mbs per second. You can have as many connections as you want.

Wow, I never asked before but I made an assumption that was totally incorrect. I assumed that TheVille Servers were all running on a Linux OS. I run Linux for my ircd and my buddy used to run linux server for <gasp> CS.
Has any of the server hosts tried running Linux to host the TFC servers?
I know the linux server rocks. Never had any slowdown problems or server lag with linux.
But I am very happy with the TVB servers as they are. I rarely have problems connecting or staying connected. Keep up the good work admins!

I used to run my previous TFC server off a Linux box and yep, that was the most trouble-free experience I've had. But I found the W2K platform easier to administer remotely, though I think it's possible to get VNC for linux now.

A T3 would cost you somewhere around $30,000 - 40,000 a month!!

Heh, The T3 "modem" is actually a $20,000 router. The bandwidth is very expensive. They ask around $28,000 per month for a T3 in my area. Remember, That is PER MONTH!
The router price may have dropped since I last priced one. But it is still an expensive situation.

Even T1 in my area is thick $$$. $1500 to set it up and $1400 a month for 100 gig then u pay for extra useage. Any opinions on weather a 640 Kbps upstream and 4 mbps downstream dsl connection could handle a 16 player server. I'm not at all worried about the server lagging I'm just not sure if that connection could suport it. |

You could try a 16 player server. DSL & cable are always iffy when hosting servers. The bandwidth fluctuates quite a bit. Some have lotsa problems, some have none. It's trial and error.
