Is linux any good?

I have been considering getting one of the distributions of linux. Is it any good. It has definitely got to be better than windows, but has its support for windows based programs increased at all? For example, would half life run good on linux?

I should imagine it would run reasonably well, seeing as some game servers are Linux machines. It probably won't be as friendly to get going as on Windoze, but I am regularly told by many folk that such niggles, which may well put some people off of making the switch, are ever-decreasing these days.

linux isn't extremely half-life friendly.

when using a windows emulator to play HL you can expect a decrease of about 40 fps.

Linux is not for gaming!!! It is (mostly) for server type applications. Which basically means that you won't get any support from major game manufactuers when it comes to gaming. The half-life you see running on Linux machines is only the server application (the thing that runs in a console window in XP).

If you are looking for a stable machine then linux might be your OS. However, it has a decent learning curve and will not be able to support all of your windows applications (however they are many very well written clones).

A dual boot system would allow you to have the stability and ability to learn linux while not giving up the versitility of windows.

I wasn't looking at linux for server applications. I was looking at it for the programming environment.

If you are comfortable with programming already then you will like it. However, if you are not comfortable with coding then it is probably best to stick to windows where you at least get error messages (albeit cryptic).

Putty is a client which allows you to log into the linux console btw. And actually there is a good deal of things you can do with linux other than program.

I stick to windows even though Linux does have some strong usages. It's really more for programming and server side stuff. It's not for gaming.
