I get this error in HL when I am running my RAM at PC100 speed. It seems to be happening at random during the game.

HL caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bffd2cea.

Need a little more information.

OS? CPU Speed and make? MoBo Manufacturer? Vid Card?

All the info about your system you can give will help.

Here it is for the trillionth time:

FIC VA-503+ motherboard based on the VIA MVP3 chipset
200 watt power supply
AMD K6-2 500 mHz processor @ 500 mHz
192 MB PC100 RAM clocked at PC66 speed
Geforce2 MX 400 64 Meg AGP in a 2x slot
20 gig hard drive
Windows 98 SE
Sound Blaster PCI 128
an ISA LAN card
a 52x cd-rom drive

Everything is fine if I am running the ram at PC66 speed, but if I clock it up the its specs, PC100, it at times gives me that error message.

Nope, it is not a virus. It is the core component of windows. THe file is kernel32.dll, everyone should have it.

How many memory chips?
Are they all SDRam?

2 sticks, one is 128MB, the other is 64MB, they are both PC100 ram which is SDRAM.

Just looked up your motherboard. It is PC66 only.
Since your motherboard doesn't support PC100 you will get errors like that.

It isn't PC66 only. What site did you look at? The manual, and manufacturer's website says it is PC100, plus the ram runs in an identical motherboard at PC100.

Also, why would I be shown the jumper settings for PC100 if the mobo isn't comatible with it?

The Motherboard is compatible with it. It just won't run it at 100mhz.
Set it to 66MHZ and leave it or you will always have problems like that.

Believe me. That motherboard is only set up for PC66 Speeds.
I don't care what rubbish they try to tell you. Any motherboard with EDO/SDRam is going to be set up to run PC66 memory. If you overclock to PC100 you take a big chance.

This isn't edo ram. This is in DIMM slots.

I understand it is in the DIMM sockets. But the fact that the mobo has EDO/DIMM slots as well as EDO/FPM slots means that the mobo was built to run at 66mhz. I don't care what you set the FSB to. I have a 400MHZ FSB on my mobo but my memory is PC133. That doesn't mean I can't run it at PC100 speeds. But if I put PC100 in mine it will not run PC133 speeds.

The clock for the Memory is set for 66mhz operation. This is a limitation of the motherboard. If you run it faster you are in essence overclocking it. That is why you are getting errors. Set it to 66mhz and play with it that way. As long as you do not get errors, you will be able to play. =)

How can it be overclocking when it is withing specs for the mobo?

I would also like to see your source for being only able to run at PC66.

Here is mine for being about to run at PC100.http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboard/document.aspx?model_id=19

IF you buy pc 133 ram and the mb only supports 100 or 66 clocks speed the ram will clock down to that speed...otherwise the sys most likely would not boot or not recoginize the ram.

It could be your power draw, the motherboard looks like it should be able to run it at PC100, but it may be trying to suck too much from the power supply which can't put out enough to run it it continuously without spikes and blackouts. Combined with what may be an instability with your motherboard not really wanting to run it in PC100 could cause the low power fluctuations to cause an error...

Whenever I had RAM problems I would get constant Kernal error problems and fixed it when I got rid of the bad ram.

Also the motherboard may claim PC100 compatability, but what manufacturers always claim doesn't always turn out to be true. Alot of companies put out flawed hardware from time to time. They won't admit it always either because it usually gets them into legal trouble with big buyers and admitting their product is flawed would cause them to lose their court battle and have to lose lots of $$

IBM is a good example of this..they made these DeskStar series hardrives, almost all of them fucked up. I had 2 and both went bad about the same time....Return Merchandise people and other computer parts gurus call them IBM's DeathStars.
