Steam 2.0 Beta January 15, 2003
Valve sends word that their plan is to begin the 2.0 beta test of their Steam broadband content delivery system this Thursday, January 16. Included in the beta will be the release of Counter-Strike version 1.6. Also included in the new Steam beta will be a new version of TeamFortress Classic "featuring the introduction of the teleportation pad, a new map (ravelin), and more.

So to play the new version of TFC (with the teleporter for the engineer and new map, Ravelin) you'll need to participate in the upcoming Steam 2.0 Beta, which is to be released Thursday, 1/16/03.

When will the ville update to this new release level (aka i need to know if it is a auto download or something that i need to do).

From i read on Valve it is automatic, but this could really fubar a dial up person.

You'll see a post about Steam on the main page when its installed on the servers. There will also be a link to any/all downloads that you need to make it work.

I don't believe that Valve has set a release date though, so I can't particularly say when Steam will kick in. I've heard good stuff about it, I'm excited (new map!). Anyway, hopefully Valve will put this out before TFC2

Is theville converting to steam? And correct me if I am wrong, but to play games it isn't manditory to have steam. You can still buy them from the store and play them like most of us do.

this is only a beta test.. you don't have to d/l it if you don't want to. The real update will come like a month or two later. And it would be seperate from your existing HL if you do decide to d/l it.

Good, I don't think that any 56ker could handle steam. Even if I had a broadband connection, I still woulndn't buy my games through steam. I would go to the store and buy them there.

You know, after Steam nearly got me banned from the old TV4,
I don't think I'm going to bite Valve's bait here...

What did TV4 think that would make it so you would get banned?

you could use the previous version of steam w/ the current version of HL if you wanted to. HL-Guard on tv4 would ban users w/ steam running.

Will valve ever make something that works completely? What is supposed to be new with this version of steam?

You do mean hlg getting it right correct? I would hope so, considering VAC that steam is making is a lot better than hlg ever will be, or was. Hlg were the people who never looked at the steam implication of certain file usage, completely not sierra's fault.

God that engi teleporter thing is going to be lame. They already have NEO for that kind of stuff. If valve really wanted to make a lot of people happy they'd:

A) Work a little on the cheating issue (not all that big I think)

and

B) LEAVE TFC ALONE, OMG, I wish they had left it alone so that shotgun and AC aim was bad, as well as the sniper rifle (you'd actually have to aim the thing more!). They also had power concs and uncapped bhopping. When they released all these patches, the game became so much more angled towards defense and took away a lot of offensive power.

Dumping the TF2 project and concentrating on Counter-Wusses was bad enough, but now they keep trying to ruin TFC.
