Y'know, right now I don't think their intentions are hostile
They've done this before (in '93) and basically, right now, what it amounts to is a crude attempt to gain attention and leverage on the international political field, for what I do not know.

War for both N Korea and the US would be an incredibly bad idea. If the US attacks N Korea then there's a good chance China will go after the US, as it has a defense treaty with N Korea. If N Korea manages to launch an attack on the US, the US (and allies) will retaliate in an overwhelming way, practically wiping out N Korea, and again China may enter.
Either way you're looking at a very real WW3 threat potential, should either side attack the other.

Nuclear weapons = no balls.

What happened to the good old days when hordes of hundreds would charge at each other and kill each other with their bare hands? Braveheart anyone?

Fists can end an argument. Nukes end the world.

Well all I say is this, get those commie bastards before they get us. When the time comes the S.Koreans will be involved and supporting the North I bet. This won't be a good thing either. Just an open invitation for China to step in since they are still pissed over the usa's involvement over taiwan. Lee Kuan Yew has warned us over and over that china will use force. It's not the question of IF as much as it is When they do we have to worry about. Let's not forget that they are still pissed at us for killing their pilot, and our enlisted service men who are stationed there who are Raping and killing their children, prostitutes ect.. and basically just for supporting taiwan with Anti-Ballistic technology instead of selling it to China.....

Any shift in the U.S. one-China policy which appears to condone or encourage two Chinas or one China and one Taiwan will be seen as a threat to China's territorial nature which will only weaken our presence there. This will only strengthen Nostradamus' revelation resulting in an apocalyptic war between "The Eagle and The ReD Dragon with the Army 10,000,000 strong!"

We don't need to be focussing all of our military strength out in the mid-east leaving our west coast door wide open either. China,N & S Korea could be setting us up for all we know ? NORAD is on a heightened stage of alert since china can now reach the heartland of america since changing from liquid fuel to a solidated fuel which can be launched on a mobile base unlike their other methods since this new fuel burns slower equaling in longer flight time. So I am worried! We can nuke Iraq with a lighter yield payload than what Little Boy did on Hiroshima that would render the city of Baghdad uninhabitable for a decade while we deal with the Asian League of Nations.

That's it. I'm going to play Starcraft. Zergling rush!

On a more serious note, I guess for now we'll have to wait and see. You never know.

South Korea is not a supporter of North Korea, indeed they've got the most to worry about over this right now given their proximity:

Quote:
North Korea is still an unpredictable state facing economic ruin, and it still has a million-strong army and thousands of artillery pieces trained on the South Korean capital Seoul.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/2645661.stm

If this situation has any particularly huge worries it's that North Korea's allies include China and Russia. Now I don't care how powerful you think America and its military is, you can not take on that kind of combination.

This situation, for america, cannot be solved by war. To do so would involve all america's allies, and their allies etc taking on all of North Korea's, China's and Russia's allies.

You also forgot that Russia is our allie now. Russia warned the North last week remember ?

North, South, East, West whatever Greenbo in a time of war the weak tend to become one regardless of their petpieves. S.Korea may not rally in support with their yankee neighbors true, but look at the rest of these fanatics who base death as the ultimate honor rather then loose face or whatever. Grudges and honor with this people and their culture are two different thing's. If you were the north who depend on the usa for oil, food to keep their already starving nation alive and are all of a sudden faced with sanctions by a country like the usa(who that entire country still hates) what would you do ???? You also failed to take into consideration that last months election

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/08/12/world/main518396.shtml

The united states goes after the North with the south being divided by old school communists who were on the verge of winning the past election a month ago that had us the usa shaken in our boots. Anyway, they will put their differences to the side I guarantee it Greenbo! All out of due respect for their heritage like the Suicide Bombers in Hamas, they are no different than the Kamikaze pilots of ww2 that see death as an honorable way to die instead of loosing face. Which in all spirituality and their belief is considered a disgrace to their country and their ancestors. So if the north threatens the south with annihilation who's side do you think the south will will choose ?

They will side with their brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greenbo, get your head out of your ego for once and think about what you post here. Some of you act as if replying to one of my posts here will kill you or something. Pop your head boy and come back to earth!

I may not spell, or write to your expectations, but any moron who knows something about the real world will tell you the same thing, if you read my post. Oh, I forgot! Your what, 17yrs old ? a kid who knows it all! Well when it's time to turn in your plaid argyle dancing dresses in for a military issue SAS then maybe you will listen to this dumb ass hick now won't you
God Save Kenny!

In case anyone here doesn't recognize it..

weapons of mass destruction = political advantage
political advantage = better trade and aid agreements
better trade and aid agreements = stronger economy and higher standard of living

Its a risky manuever, but with a strong global tendancy to avoid war.....well, what would you do if you were a poor, distained country?

Probably one of the most accurate takes on the subject thus far.

What scares people. . . is when better trade and aid agreements are withheld. Just how far is someone willing to go to protect/further their people? Would you kill to do it? I bet many would. I know I would. I would do anything to protect my family. Creepy stuff.

This has so far been civilised, so let's try and keep the ad hominems to a minimum shall we?

True, and both Russia and China have made it clear they're against this - but BOTH countries are still N Korea's allies and both want this ended peacefully. If war broke out, I think the situation...probably more with China than Russia, would be different. Don't forget, China has the largest amount of armed forces in the world. US army is better trained perhaps but it wouldn't be an easy fight by a long stretch of the imagination

Ok, if south korea does side with north, then you just add their army to the equation making it more difficult for the USA.
It's true that relations between north and south have been improving and up until this point I'd say that was a damn good thing too, but the south ain't stupid.
But your point on the dependancy on the USA just furthers my thoughts that this is a crude bargaining chip, an attempt to gain further aid in return for scrapping their nuclear program or returning to the non-proliferation treaty.
