|
|
I'm sure you have noticed an increase in the number of pictures being used for peoples signatures as well as pictures being included in posts.
Some of these pictures are getting a tad large for the forums, both in resolution and size. Here are some general guidelines on posting images, hopefully you will try to work within them.
Signatures
Try to keep the images you use in your signature to under 150 pixels in height and 500 pixels wide. Also try to keep them under 50 K in size.
Smaller files load faster and this is very important to those with slower connections.
Images in posts
Just a couple of guidelines here.
Try to keep your images to either 640X480 or 800X600 in size. If you wish to link to a larger picture I suggest you use a thumbnail.
Also, try to keep these images around 50 K in size again to be considerate of those that have slower connections.
The ideal solution is to use a thumbnail to link to larger pictures, that way people can get an idea of what they are going to view before actually doing so.
Thanks

Now if your interested in how to use thumbnails in your posts here is an example of the required UBB code to make it happen.

So you will need two copies of the same image. The original large image (your_photo_big.jpg in the example above) and a smaller image to use as a thumbnail (your_photo_small.jpg in the example).
I have found that a thumbnail should not be larger than 200 X 150 and they can be smaller. Your image can be any size that you like but if its over 200K you may wish to warn people in your post that they are downloading large images. Many digital cameras crank out images more than 2MB in size and if you dont edit to shrink the filesize this can take some time to be viewed even on a highspeed connection.
The other thing you will need is a place to host your images. Your ISP may provide you with some space but if they dont you may wish to consider a Ville Membership as one of its benefits is space for files on this server.
Thats about it for now, feel free to ask any questions.
