look guys, I know by the first post it must seem I'm very critical of movies that are derived from books that I love. basically it's true, but I can look at it from the moviemaker's perspective. When I saw the Bourne Identity, I came out of the theatre shaking my head. What they had done was take the basic premise of the book, change all the details, and then give it the same title. From the perspective of someone who had never read the book, I would have said it was a great action movie. And no one will ever hear me utter a bad word about Franka Potente, who is a great Actress, if you like german films.
But I felt the same way about the two towers. I thought the job they did on the FEllowship was great. They managed to keep a great deal of the details the same, with minor variances in order to expedite plot flow and things like that. The only major differences that I didn't like was the fact that Arwen had such a large part in the movie. As for the Two Towers, I just couldn't understand some of the changes. I will elucidate now. Be forwarned ******Spoiler Alert********* from here on down.
1. the ents. While I loved their look and sound and feel, why did they have to be tricked into fighting Saruman? They had already said in the movies that the trees (Not Ents, mind you)could talk, so why would Treebeard have been shocked to see so many trees hewn down? Wouldn't they have cried for help, and then other trees echoed the cry, lik in the book? There were also no Huorns in the movie, which I think would've made for some spectacularly chilling scenes.
2. The Elves: WTF, where were they ever even mentioned in TT????? Why were they even put in there?? The Two Towers was, in IMHO, a book of men, their deeds, and their interaction with the fellowship of the ring. The Elves had no place in this movie and they pretty much stuck out like a sore thumb, plus they killed off Haldir. Plus, the elves had been saying throughout the entire series that their age was ending, and that their time was at an end.
3. Eomer. Why did they feel the need to banish eomer, and thus force theoden to seek refuge once he had been awoken? For some reason, I think this was made to enliven an already action packed movie. Without the banishment, there would have been no need for elves to come to the rescue.
4. the battle of Helms Deep. I would have like it if there had been just the Rohinnion and the Fellowship present. It leaves the possibility for utter destruction available, as well as the unlooked for salvation that came in the form of the Huorns. I did like the Torch carrier tho. But I will always wonder, if Legolas had never missed a killing shot before, why would he miss a brightly lit, unarmored, Urukhai, running in a straight line towards him?????? Seems like they thought the plot needed enlivening again. Why would you need to enliven a battle scene????
5. Arwen and Aragorn. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! Why would they even do that?!?!?!?! What could possibly be gained from making it seem that their relationship is strained, or worse, ended???? I mean seriously, she has to come back in the 3rd movie, or else I'm seriously gonna get pissed.
6. Faramir. WTF Again!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, so they take the guy who was the opposite of his brother in disposition, and they made him just like Boromir. I feel that this part needlessly lengthened crucial scenes, as well as made them completely different than the book. And what was up with Frodo coming face to face with the Nazgul??? If eve there was a needless scene, it was that one. They basically have made Faramir the opposite of what he is. the scene with him in the hiding place with frodo and sam sets his personality for the rest of the book, and he has now been cheapened, IMHO.
Just so you don't all think I'm a bastard, I did enjoy a great deal of the movie, especially the battle scene. I thought the ents in their fury were fantastic, and I wish I could've seen more of them. I loved the final charge in the movie, though it had no basis in the book. The visuals were stunning, I just wish that the story could have been as moving as it should rightfully have been. There are mor items I could put down as points of contention, but I won't. I realize that changes have to be made to keep a movie flowing, as well as to limit it's length, but some of the changes were needless, as well as additions that had no place in the movie. _________________ Under construction!!! |
