For sometime now I've noticed an increase in the frequency of bunny hopping and perhaps speed cheats. What threads I've read on the subject have suggested that speed cheats are criminal but bunny hopping is permisable.
Up until now I've been content playing the way the game was designed to be played. However, with so many people speeding around, it's becoming difficult to be effective.
Thus I ask, can someone explain to me how this bunny hopping is done? I've tried jumping while I run but it's no more effective than running. Feedback on this issue would be appreciated.

Bunnyhopping, a history:
Bunnyhopping has been around since the days of quake. Since half-life was based in part on the quake engine it too inherited bhop. Old school bhop in tfc was awsome, allowing the player to travel at over 400% their classes rated speed. Even an hw can outrun a scout if he's a good bunnyhopper. However, all good (or bad) things come to an end. In CS bhop was totally removed and they now have a stupid recharge after I jump because I mysteriously become weak thing going on. In tfc it was turned down so that a person can only hop at 140% of their classes maxium speed.
Bunnyhopping is:
Basically fooling the half life engine into thinking you are turning corners in mid air while touching the ground for minimal time.
How to do it:
Firstly, the timing of your jump is very important. You can either do this with a script which will spam a bunch of jumps into the command line ever time you hit your jump button, or you can do it with mwheelup - which you spin and it does essentially the same thing. Or you can be a brave soul and use your normal jump button - but the timing is a bitch to get down. After that you have to jump in such a way that you can direct yourself forward with your strafe keys. Basically this means that you alternate the direction of your looking with the direction you are strafing. You switch back and forth between the two directions so that you travel in a moderatly straight line. In reality it is more of a sine curve type thing. The tighter you can keep the arc the faster you are going forward (but you still have to do that turning thing in midair.)
There are some how to's online - but the best way is to get with someone that can already do it and have them help you with it. If you want to see if you are doing it right you can download sparky's utls (a hook) which has a speedometer which will tell you your percent speed increase.

I thought that you actually had to change your config in order to gain any speed from bunny hopping. I guess if you get good enough, you can do it without altering anything? _________________ Amen!

Thank you for your replies gentlemen. It would seem that bunny hopping is just as much a skill as it is a cheat (at least in my minds eye). Up until this point I've been thinking negatively about those that do it. After reading the information you both provided I have to adjust my feelings on this issue. Having said all that, I have no intention of learning the 'skill'. But for those of you that can do it... here's to you.

I'm with you Meat. I tried to learn to do it, then decided I play for fun and spending time practising bunny hoping isnt my idea of fun. |

That's all you need Monk. You don't need a special config or anything. _________________

Have hated and always hate the bunnyhop. Its not the players at fault though but Valve for not fixing it.Theres always the bhop script which toggles jumping on and off so all you have to do is master the mouse and strafe movements gg Valve _________________

Is Sparkys allowed?
Are hooks cheats?

Actually valve has fixed it...they have fixed it to 140%.
Lol, uncapped is just crazy fast - I think it's a lot more interesting for o and d because it required you to make fast decisions or you would end up pasted to a wall.
edit: Hat, not all hooks are cheats. Most leagues allow sparkies utls. I'm not going to even guess where the ville's stance is though. Not that anything detects it specifically, yet. _________________ The most hated.
