For about the last month and a half I've noticed more and more players acting worse and worse. More people come in claiming to have skill but they herd like sheep. Personally I've become very bitter over this and I hope you guys can forgive me in-game, because I am just getting so sick of having to carry a team by myself. I'll try to charge up with a medic following me (thanks Magnetron:)) and I'll take out sentries only to find all my teammates except for that medic and myself cowering way back expecting someone to do something for them. Look at my suicides and look at my event history, I have been trying and trying to help and people never do jack-diddly. I know I'm not the only one like this either, I've been playing and watching the villes best get miserable scores without their team to help them out. I know a certain spy enthusiast who's been killing sg's left and right only to get mowed down after clearing an entire command point by himself and seeing nobody on his team even move forward. We miss the old spirit of teamplay and the avanti wars we had before where people were rocket jumping to cap points left and right and everyone was in a frenzy to kill and win rather than loafing back. I remember when the women were hot and the beer flowed like a river (ok, well not that part ). My point is it seems to me that we've lost the spirit we had before, and a lot of us want it back. |

This is too common these days. All team shooters are degrading to deathmatches with individual score being teh only thing that matters. This has happened in Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament, Legends of Might and Magic, Team Fortress, and probably more.

Bak, I think this is all part of the annual cycle of players. When college starts up in the fall that's when most of the players learn about the game and get online. Now we're 3 months into the semester and people are learning how to stay alive in the game but not how to coordinate with their team. I think it's all about the evolution of the team player from a n00b. However if you have seen regulars playing that way, my argument is moot.

Warhammer is right. It's tough to make the transition from cannon fodder to devil-may-care team player. In between, there is a period of "wow, I'm still alive" caution. You have to reach a pretty high level of skill to wade into the thick of battle and accomplish something meaningful. Especially here, where there are always a lot of good players waiting to hand you your n00b ass on a platter.
Heck, sometimes I want to go off on people for playing with NOT ENOUGH caution. There are always a few guys who run right in front of my sentry gun 20 times in a row, and all they're accomplishing is padding my score. Taking a few extra seconds to attack intelligently would serve them much better.

Let's not forget that rushing to attack isn't necessarilly team play either. I hate to watch the NME lemmings charge the cap point one at a time. Most of the time I never see the flag, just a bunch of single file lemmings. As a sniper I should have to choose a target, but often I just shoot them 1 by 1 as they try to jump from the balcony etc.
I think the college theory is mostly correct. Often the evolution of play is attack, survive, TeamPlay. The regulars often know what their teammates are planning to do , since they've done it a number of times. It all depends on the goal they are going for. Team goal or individual goal. Most non regulars will have personal goals. It's a public server, this is to be expected. We also have a large population of regulars, so we expect more teamplay.
I say all we can do is teach by example and "politely" pointing out the error of their ways when they do this Lame stuff.
Example: "Yo Idiot, why do you have a SG in the church, they haven't even capped 1 yet !!!" |

I have to admit, I was really angry the other day at the teams, so much so I left the server. I was going about my business with my AC blazing and clearing out mgs and sgs while my team of snipers and engys fortified cap point 1 (we were attacking at this point) I know there has been a return of the stat junkies now that no stats is over, but that was rediculous. I know I'm guilty of this at times, but only until I have enough health to return to battle. I know being a college student myself that there is the influx of Freshmen who have never had a connection over 56k suddenly be blessed with a LAN and realize they can play online and not see the game in fragments before they die from an unseen enemy...But that was rediculous, and I apologize for yelling at you Dad, I died of infection 4 times before you got to me as a medic. I was rather frustrated at the other team and their 3 medics. Happy Fragging, Snagg |

The college thing might be true but even still, I'm seeing regulars trying to rally their teams to move forward only to have them scatter like a herd of sheep. They yell at eachother for doing nothing and complain when they don't get anywhere. I have literally held the ramp and lower area at CP3 and watched my teammates hide in the death room expecting me to wipe out the entire enemy team (which I can only do maybe one time if I'm lucky) and fly and shoot fireballs out of my eyes and put up a friggin forcefield around them. And for some reason, everyone knows who I am, I have never seen some of these people before in my life! I mean, it's cool to have lots of friends here, but some people are just so random! I like how more people are making friends, but I still think that the n00b rush is kinda detrimental to the villes. |
