Borg, you should trying running a long-term ping when you're on the interweb. At a command prompt, type:

ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (some IP address... or something like google.com) -t

so: ping google.com -t

That'll just keep pinging the site until you hit control-C to cancel it.

If there's a ton of "request timed out" style messages, then my bet is that it's just a crappy line.

What speeds can you get a sustained download at? If you have a 56K modem, and can only download at say... 3.8 KB/sec, then you have a crappy line...

Go to www.dslreports.com and run some speed tests... from their main page, go to "our tools" on the left, and then "speed tests"... pick one of the servers, and run it... again, if you have a 56K modem, and they show up saying like 41kbps speed, then it's a shitty line.

Test a whole bunch of things, over the better part of a day, at different times... if they all give you packet loss, time outs, and slow speeds, then it's most likely the line to your pad that's the problem.

If it does turn out to be a poopie phone line, then you might be able to gripe to the phone company about it, but I repeat, *might*...

Ran ping for about 5 minutes and here is the final result.

Quote:
Packets: Sent = 262, Received = 262, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 206ms, Maximum = 522ms, Average = 230ms
Control-C

I know that is the odd thing. I get the packet loss when playing games and they run through a different protocol than the ping utility does, so I am wondering if something lies there.

It's probably a bad node somewhere in between. I know I have problems with TV1 from time to time. Actually TV4 has the same problems for me. I did a trace route and found a couple bad nodes on the way to the servers so hopefully someone somewhere is working on the problem.

That is one thing that I have considered. But if it was just a bad node, there would be some servers taht would be good. I get this problem on all servers. Also a tracert doesn't show any problems along the way.

I am using opengl which in the past caused nothing to occurr and I haven't done anything to my video to cause it to change.

I found out that the connection works during the day and it doesn't seem to work correctly after about 5 or 6 PM. I would guess that it might be an ISP issue, but would appreciate other input from people.
