by lock, do you mean not let them be moved... or not let them be added/erased?

You might be able to take the desktop folder and make it read-only... then nothing could be added or deleted... but I have no idea if that'd actually work, and I don't have any win9x/ME machines anywhere near me anymore, so I can't try it.

I haven't played with 98 for a loooooong time, however, beyond BBF's suggestion I don't think you can.

Mostly because Win98 isn't a secure operating system. Anyone can get in, even without a username/password.

You might also look to see if 98 maintains individual profiles, for users who actually log in. If it does, look for a folder called Desktop. If each individual user has that, move the icons you want to keep from the All Users folder to that profiles Desktop folder.

This would accomplish 2 things. First, other users wouldn't see those icons specific to your desktop, and they wouldn't be able to accidentally erase them.

Not really. Even setting up different users all one has to do is click cancel on the passwrod info and 98 will open up.

Yes, but it would use the default user profile, not a specific users profile.

But being able to bypass the log-in is what I meant by "not being secure".

If this is that big of a problem for you, there is security software you can buy (But the cost probably won't be worth it)
