I've found that technical support are usually a bunch of idiots who go by what the book tells them to do, instead of an obvious solution. Doing it yourself is generally faster. _________________

I generally hate calling support for things but I really wish I could have this. I get so many stewpid calls. The other day a paralegal called and said her computer wouldn't boot up it just kept displaying "It is now safe to turn off your computer".
I asked her to hold the power button for ten seconds so the PC would reset. She said it came back with the same thing. I asked her if she was sure she was turning off the PC and not the monitor. She of course said yes so I of course had to go up 17 floors to see her. When I got there she was switching the monitor on and off.
Now this isn't some 70 year old partner. This paralegal is 23 and has been using PCs all her life. Sheesh what they say about blondes has gotta be true. I wish I coulda smacked her upside her head for wasting my time.
I know BBF and some others have similiar horror stories. I think there was a thread a while back about IT horror stories. _________________

If they could all do it by themselves there would be no need for us stupid tech support people.
Always look at it this way, if the tech support people are really that stupid then how bad off are you for having to call them _________________ Killing is my bidness ladies and BIDNESS IS GOOD!!!! |

Having begun my career in tech support, and worked my way up to systems administrator, I take offense to your statement. _________________

Oh sure, thanks for reminding me... now I'm going to be twitching for at least a week.
It's sort of like that time (in 2001) when people wanted their inventory database software put on the windows 2000 server. At least I can honestly say that I've plugged a 5 1/4 floppy drive into a 2K server. The only copy of the whole program fit onto a single 360K floppy. *twitch*
Or one of my personal favorites: 4 different college kids called and asked for help getting their "new" PC hooked up to the college's LAN. Well, the 1st time I went to work on it (in 2000) it was a pentium 60 with 8 megs of ram, but being a nice guy, I gave them a free upgrade to a whopping 16 megs. Anyway, it was one of those purple Acer PCs from about 1996.
After failing to get any network card to work on it, apparently the kid gave it to a friend, and guess what? I wasn't able to get it to work the 2nd time... or the 3rd time (3rd different kid), or the 4th time (4th different kid)... I almost wanted to confiscate the damned POS, since those service calls were getting in the way of other important work (reference the above situation, same college) *twitch, drool*
Ohhh, and one of the best ones yet: This just happened about a month ago. We had a guy come here and want to use the free community access lab to do some work... we bend over backwards to allow him to install his own software (against policy) just so he can do stuff. Then he comes back a couple days later acting pissier than darkw0r claiming that we deleted all his work. Well, to make a long story a little shorter, I had to explain to him that a standard CD can't be written to, and a standard CD-ROM drive can't write to anything, no matter what kind of CD R/RW you put into it. **fighting to keep the twitching under control so I can type*
Or possibly my all-time personal favorite: The wireless antenna that they put on the opposite side of the electro-magnetic shielding glass, and were mystified why their signal strength sucked donkey. *uncontrollable twitching*
I'll be OK, really. |

We have a support mailbox that people can email from inside our firm for support. we support over 300 different applications of which almost all are password protected and use various different user ID's. So I was handling this mailbox one day and someone actually sent me a message that simply said these words:
Subject: Login Issues
Body: Hi I am unable to login
I just deleted the message. _________________ Killing is my bidness ladies and BIDNESS IS GOOD!!!! |
