I'm a bitter old man about the movie.
They left too much out, invented far too many parts and didnt remain true to the book in a number of areas.
Geez, Hollywood cant even get SF&F right.
But I did get the DVD today anyhow just so I can be bitter all over again.

It is called "artistic license" with the screenplay.
I agree that they left out or added too many parts, but it was probably one of the 2 best movies I saw last year and I probably will own the DVD shortly as well. _________________

A differing opinion: All in all I think they did allright between the book and making a Hollywood success. They had to not only cater to us (who have read and enjoyed the book) but also the short attentioned movie going public. That said I would rather it been a bit slower paced (miss lots of good dialog when the black riders are chasing you from the onset) and they should've included Tom and Goldberry. A good movie anyways.... _________________ The most hated.

They did leave out a lot, but the movie inspired me to read the book. I guess you have to look at it from a different perspective for those who haven't read the book and saw the movie. I, on the other hand, didnt' read the book and saw the movie. The movie was dope, had a lot of action and the following week I went to Barnes and Nobles to buy the hardback version of LOTR. The book really helps to fill in the gaps no doubt. Can't wait until Matrix 2 comes out!!! Now that movie is going to be dope. If only I can fly busting a 4-5 kick combo on a foo's face I'd be known as 1337. I'd be like," Waaaaaaaa don't mess with me I"ll kung fu your @$$!" _________________ I like you---that's why I'm going to kill you last.

I read the books about a month before the movie ever came out, so I have my own perspective. The books were OK...I just didn't care for them. I read a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy, and these books just were not my type.
I did love the movie though, and I will be buying it on DVD this weekend more than likely. One of the best movies of last year for sure. _________________ Been chasing since May 2001!

My wife just came back from blockbuster with 3 movies 2 were rentals and one was free to keep. It was Lord of the Rings.
Now I own the Movie I hope its good, haven't seen it yet. I read the books somewhere around 72 ish. Jethro Tull's Living in the past album was one of my favorites and at the time a perfect accompiment to reading the trilogy. I still think of one or the other when I think of either.
With so much time passed I hope Ill have a good time watching the movie. |

JD, you are complaining that left a lot out, but think about it. The movie was like 2 and a half hours as it is, can you imagine how excruciatingly long it would've been with the other stuff?!
hehe
I really liked the movie, and the book. I am waiting on my copy from bestbuy.com. _________________ I WAS (back in august of 02) just better than you, thats all.

I think the reason why they left out alot is because of just the length the movie would be. Think about how much money they spent on the movie. Now think about how much more money they would spend if they left nothing out. Think of how long the movie would be... It takes atleast a day or two of full reading to finish the book, so how long would it take to watch the movie then?
