I run win 2000 on my machine. And I have an issue that I need advice on. Every now and again (espec at boot up) my process explorer.exe will tax the cpu at max levels. I have tyred to fig out why with no resolve. It will also lock me up on occasion during gaming (I think when damn D3D is being used).

I know what that process is and have looked to resolve any issues. LOL no hardware, port etc issues. Device manager shows all go. And as I said there are no irq conflicts either (eventhough my next step os to force them into certain ones hehe).

The sys is:

P4 2 gig
Nvida Geforce4 ti 4600 128 mb card
512mb pc 2700 ram
IBM 40 gm 133 hd (removed raid having issues with it lol...dont ask first card was defective)
soundblaster audio something gamer
bah and this could be it out of all things generic nic
MB is asus P4 333

Not overclocked as of yet hehe. But I do use beta Nvida drivers for my video card (same prob with non betas too).

Any ramblings would be helpfull as I go back to my CMOS to really piss of my machine

DK

explorer.exe choking your machine? LOL, leave it to microsoft to have a "critical" process choke your machine

Uh... tough one... I'd suggest trying to eliminate all unnecessary processes for a while, to see if explorer.exe chokes ya still. Otherwise, I don't have much to offer on this one *shrug*

Any time my system is acting freaky, I reinstall the latest Service Pack. That usually does the trick.

It's usually the Antivirus that causes it to choke.

Fixed. Followed Warhammers advice reinstalled service pack and then put the other updates online. A big part of the problem was that the Creative Sound card shipped with ancient non xp/2000 drivers which caused most of the problem.

that will do it. W2000 is the most stable of the microsoft OS(NT too) but when you don't have appropriate drivers, it gets a little whacky. WhHen I first installed w2k on my machine, it was hard to find the right drivers. Now its fairly simple to find them. glad you got your prob fixed DK. peace

Just an FYI.
When ever you add new hardware and sometimes when you install new software you need to reapply the latest Service pack.
