Should we have a link to a newbie section?
Somewhere the new people can go to get up to speed on Key binding and other tricks that they would have to generaly ask in game and individualy. Would this be good for them?
Or is it better to learn the "old fashion way?"
Somewhere that wont get buired in the posts after a few weeks.

That is a good idea roofcutter. I know that when I started playing it was a long time before I learned things like binding keys, scripts, the meaning of llama, skill and ranking on the ville pages, etc.
I think that would be very welcoming for newcomers. |

I agree, I think it is an excellent idea, Roof. I think it is always a good thing to give folks the info they need to have fun, but learn enough not to annoy the crap out of us regulars I saw a newbie on one of the servers the other night. And he asked a question like, "How do you blow up tunnel?" Seems basic, but if you've just loaded up TFC for the first time, its a decent question.
If you figure that the original Half-Life software is probably just now making it into the super bargain bins, we could be seeing more of this.
If there is such a section created, I would be happy to contribute to it. Just let me know what you think I should cover.

I see now you were talking about a link to a newbie section (and I assume you mean one not on this website but somewhere else). That's probably a better way to go. But if the link was placed in a part of TV for newbies we could augment it with explanations of the stats or whatever we think necessary. Useful info specific to TheVille servers.

Along with this idea: Do you know if there are any resources that show a thumbnail plan view of the maps? I tried Acropolis2 last night and got my a$$ kicked because I didn't know where anything was.
A newbie section might be just the place for such a resource. Even a seasoned player can be a "newbie" on a new map until he learns where things are.

I was thinking somewhere on this server.
Most likely in JohnDoes tips section.
It dosen't get a lot of traffic so things won't disappear.
How about we write something on the maps and various newbie stuff and post there. We need ot get our act together on the maps or we will end up with a dozen posts drowning the newbie in info.
Wait heres what we can do. If we all post there with our ideas after a time we can summarise all our info and then delete all the posts and just have 1 post per subject/map or something like that. What do you think EH.

Roof that is a GREAT idea! Here is another thing that would be able to help them. You put together a map of all the maps on the server rotanshions and they can go there and look at it and find out where respwan is, where the wall can be blown, etc.

DukeNukem, whenever a strange map hits the rotation, I'll download it and then play it solo. You can use the Multiplayer-->LAN Game option to Create a game for yourself. You'll only be able to run around alone, but you can find flags, cap points, supply packs, sniper/sentry spots, and so on. (If you are really hardcore, you can download a bot and play against some simulated opposition. But that's a topic for another day.)

Anyways you already have amp of the Map in your Half Life/TFC/Overviews Folder. They are in BMP form, and are all there. But I also download and play through maps before I play them as well as look at the map. If you're a real hardcore player you could print them all out and keep them in a binder next to your computer, when that map comes up flip to the map in your binder and have it open while you play to look at and decide how to plan strategy and stuff like that. I just have the maps memorized with my photographic memory, and I'm a big fan of the Ninja HW tactics of sneaking up on people and letting them all have it in the back.

Thom is 100% right. Running around on your own without fealing pressure to preform gives you lots of time to get the general layout planted in your head.
Lucky for Killer and I we get to run around them together in a lan discussing the good points and bad. Under a no shooting agreement. We never break it. Yeah right haha. |

Thanks I didn't know that. I do also like the idea of starting up the map in LAN mode just to explore.
When I tried Acropolis2 the other night I had never been on the map before. It was gruesome . . . too horrible for words.

I'm working on making a website right now, I'm gonna have a strategy guide and newbie guide and such in there. It should be up within the next week (hopefully) I'll give you a link to it when I'm finished.
