What do you all think is better and why because I am really desperate to get rid of AOL and get up to speed.
It would be helpful to say which companies are the best and whats the average ping of it. Thanks! _________________ <---- LinktoDeath-TPF-VS-

I prefer dsl. It is a dedicated connection and not a shared connection like cable. Cable does have the perk of if you are the only one on the node it will be helllishly fast (t1 speed).
But I also hate ATT who is may cable provider. I also hate the phone cos for dsl. So I went with Earthlink for dsl and I have had 0 probs.

Prices would also be something that I would be interseted in. I want to convince my parents to get rid of dial-up, but since I am the only one who uses it, they don't want to pay much more than they are. _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. Maybe I will eventually. |

$50.00 bucks a month is about standard in my area for either service.
More than dial up but the phone line will never be busy when someone is online and a 115mb file will no longer scare you to download.
DK
Pings vary. I am in oregon so my link the ville servers in the south are right about 120. If the game server is closer I am 50-80 ms lag. _________________ P4E @ 4.00 Ghz, LeadTech 6800GT 420mhz/1.16Ghz, 1 gb Corsair PC 4400, Creative X-fi, Raptor

That is the exact reason why they won't get dsl or cable. I also would want to pipe it to two computers and that would cost more. _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. Maybe I will eventually. |

That's why you get a hub/router and split the signal for the same price.
Check out www.dslreports.com, they have a bunch of info about ISPs and other stuff.

Either one is great and prices are about the same. I preferr DSL as it is dedicated and you don't share. Other also mentioned that with either the phone line is never busy. With either of them and a Lynksys DSL/Cable router ($93.00 tops via online) and some cat 5 wire you can hook up to 253 pc's together. I have around 7 pcs on my network of which 3 or 4 are always online and running some kind of game with no loss of speed for TFC.
I would stress this to your parents:
1. The phone will not be tied up so any kind of emergency call will get through.
2. If this more than one user in the house(PC user guys) you only need the one account not one for each user.
3. Gee Mom and Dad I can down load those big files for my report due next week in a couple of minutes instead of hours. _________________

Lol Bada Bing just called me "other" in his post. One of the best things he has ever called me lol
DK
For me I share the connection in a diff way. Adds a few ms in ping but I had the parts at home. One comp has 2 nics in it. One is connected to the dsl/cable modem. The other goes to a hub. I share that internet connection and boom all are online. The bare bones costs $18.00 for the nics and 30 for the hub. _________________ P4E @ 4.00 Ghz, LeadTech 6800GT 420mhz/1.16Ghz, 1 gb Corsair PC 4400, Creative X-fi, Raptor

What they are saying is that I can wait until I graduate and go to college. And no one really used the line besides myself and no one really wants on it too much except for my brother, who doesn't get on too much. _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. My DSL is about 50 bucks. My ping is generally less than 100... most often it seems to range between 15 and 60. And, keep in mind, we have a router in the house and have 4 computers sharing this DSL connection. _________________

Bada Bing,
You get DSL up in Pioneer out in the middle of nowhere? They ought to rename Pionear to Pionfar from everywhere.
I just moved from Sunnyvale in the heart of Silicon Valley where my DSL line was ~500 kbs with DirectTV to Lodi where I get ~1100 kbs from EarthLink.
When you lived up on Hwy 49, I had moved close enough to have gotten you with sniper rifle on a bench rest - if'n you would only stand still.
Never had cable so I can not compare them |

I love the way Americans say "Mum"
Oh, and I have optus@home cable. I don't know the price of it monthly, but I get a 200 ping and a bit of lag all the way from Sydney! That's the other side of the world! Ah...modern technologies.... |

I don't know if your parents pay for a second line for the puter.. but that probably runs what 25 bucks alone then 20 bucks for the Internet connection on dial-up hmm lets see that's what 45 dollars...
and with broadband you only need 1 line... so what's the big deal?
of course if they don't pay for a second line.. just frag me next time ya see me > _________________ Life is stupid as hell |
